Charlotte was born on October 12, 1931 in Strandburg, SD to Wendell and Thelma (Thompson) Backman. She grew up in the Strandburg and LaBolt communities. She attended elementary school in LaBolt and high school in Strandburg.
Charlotte went to Sunday school and confirmation classes at Grace Lutheran Church in LaBolt. It was here she came to love the Lutheran faith, and made lifelong friends.
Charlotte married Raymond Larson in Sioux City, Iowa on July 30, 1948. They made their home in LaBolt for two years, then moved to Milbank. They joined American Lutheran Church, and she was a member there until her death. As her faith grew, she became active in American Lutheran Church by serving as a Sunday school teacher, Jr. Lutherans and Luther League leader; as well as serving on the church council. She was a charter member of the Altar Guild and faithfully served for 50 years until her health no longer allowed her to serve. She was active in the ladies' groups and served many meals in the kitchen. She was fortunate that all of the pastors had Bible studies that she thoroughly enjoyed.
Charlotte was a stay-at-home mom for ten years before she started working part-time as an appliance sales lady at Schwagerl Electric affiliated with Otter Tail Power. After two years she became a secretary for Earl Bohlen at Whetstone Realty. She also managed the apartment buildings. Earl and Arlo Allen encouraged her to study and become a realtor. In 1970 she became a licensed South Dakota realtor. She was proud to be the first woman elected to the Northeast South Dakota Board of Realtors. After ten years of several cancer surgeries and treatments, she chose to leave the real estate business. She became the office manager at Community Cable Company for five years and then became secretary for the Grant County Judicial System. Upon retirement she served part-time as bailiff for Grant County.
Faith, family and friends were very important in her life.
Charlotte is survived by her children: Michael (Carol), Colleen, Teresa (Brian) Stillson, Marc (Sandi) and Michele (Joe) Harvey; four grandchildren: Heather (Eric) Miller, Matthew (Dena) Larson, Seth (Sharla) Larson and Zach Larson; seven great-grandchildren, Elliott, Max, Tayden, William, Brynna, Evalyn and Lenora; her special niece, Lynette Ramirez; and many other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister and a brother.
