Cheri Ellen Smith

On September 14, 2025, our Lord and Savior called home Cheri E. (Allen) Smith. Cheri was born on September 29, 1950 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Ella O. Allen and Joshua D. Allen. She was preceded in death by her brother Joshua Allen Jr. and sister Audrey Williams.
Cheri graduated from Schenley High School in 1968 where was a majorette and pom-pom girl. She later attended several business schools where she earned her certificate in Administration. She worked for the City of Pittsburgh in the Controller's office for 16 years and later retired from Allegheny County.
Cheri accepted Christ at a young age and attended Monumental Baptist Church where she met her future husband the late Bernard L. Smith. They later married in 1973 and had one daughter, Serena Michelle Broughton. She later joined Mount Ararat Baptist Church and participated in the Hospitality Ministry where she enjoyed greeting church members on Sunday mornings.
Cheri became a community activist in Homewood, PA and she served as the Secretary of the 13th Ward of the Democratic Committee for over 20 years and also served as the Secretary for Bennett Place Tenant Council. Cheri was a member of the Homewood Concerned Citizens and Operation Better Block's Cluster 5 Group. She enjoyed volunteering her time helping at various community organizations such as Community Empowerment Association, Homewood Children's Village and the NAACP. What she loved most was spending time with her family and picking with her son in law up until her last moments.
Cheri is survived by her daughter Serena Broughton, son in law Jevon Broughton, grandson Sean Thomas, granddaughter Jade Broughton, granddaughter Kymberlee Broughton, grandson Jevon Broughton Jr., great grandchildren Jaejuan Penn, Rylee Saunders, Amorè Ponce, nieces, nephews and great nieces, great nephew and great great nieces and nephews.
