Cherry Dawson, age 87, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2026, in Battle Creek, MI, surrounded by loved ones, after a life rich in love, purpose and meaningful friendships.
Born on July 23, along with her twin brother Garry, in Battle Creek, MI, Cherry was the daughter of Robert and Cherry Hyslop. From an early age, she demonstrated an energetic personality, independence, determination, kindness, curiosity and athletic competitiveness; qualities that remained evident throughout her life.
Cherry received her undergraduate degree from Western and her Master’s degree in Education from University of Michigan. As a lifelong educator, Cherry dedicated 35 years to Battle Creek Public Schools and prior to BCPS, she student taught at Lakeview School District and Garden City Public Schools in Garden City, MI. She was a passionate teacher who strongly believed in the power of education, and she helped open doors for generations of students. She leaves an enduring legacy as a respected teacher whose impact extended far beyond the classroom, shaping values, futures and her community. Cherry was known for her strong work ethic both professionally and personally. Beyond professional pursuits, she found great joy in golf, swimming, skiing, travel and her faith. She treasured time spent with family, friends and grandchildren. Marco Island, Florida held a special place in her heart, where she spent a majority of her retirement years. She enjoyed Marco’s beaches, her warm condo community and the many friendships and memories she built there.
Cherry was preceded in death by parents, Robert and Cherry Hyslop and her two brothers, Garry Hyslop and Robert Hyslop. Cherry is survived by Robin Kerr (Scott), Kris Kamish (Michael), grandchildren, Ryan Kerr (Savanna), Brennan Kerr (Nicole Berry), Kieran Kamish, and great-grandchild, Kennedy Kerr. She is survived also by her brothers, Larry Hyslop (Jeanie), Eddie Hyslop (Cindy), Steven Hyslop and Timmy Hyslop (Dianne). She leaves behind many cherished friends and extended family members who will deeply miss her presence, laughter and smile.
We extend deep gratitude and love to Tonia Wendt and her incredible family, Flip, Maddie, Bubba, along with their extended family and friends. Their incredibly compassionate care and friendship made her final years a blessing from heaven above.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date this summer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Battle Creek YMCA, in honor of Cherry’s life and values.
