Fort Atkinson, WI - Cheryl "Cherie" L. Reed Wester, age 77, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully in her home, on July 29, 2025, in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. A lifelong Wisconsin resident, Cherie was born in Watertown and spent her life surrounded by family, friends, and the beauty of the state she loved.
Cherie was the daughter of the late Ralph "Butch" Ertl and Bernice "Bern" Ertl (née Kottmann). She was preceded in death by her first husband, James "Jim" Reed, and her second husband, Wayne Wester.
She is survived by her daughters, Tamara Hoehn (Michael) of Denver, CO, and Shannon Ruegg (Craig) of Hartford, WI; her beloved grandchildren, Cameron Hoehn (Jessica), Connor Hoehn (Kateland May), Claire Hoehn, Georgia Ruegg, and Greta Ruegg; and her great-grandchildren, Emmett and Louise Hoehn. She is also survived by her stepdaughters, Amy Stewart (John) of Germantown, WI, and Rebecca Hobbs (Fred) of Connecticut. Cherie will be deeply missed by her partner, Jim Lousier, as well as her many extended family members and friends.
Cherie's life was defined by her curiosity, intellect, and love of adventure. She was quick-witted, warm, and always ready to laugh or try something new. Whether playing cards (especially with her Wednesday night regulars), reading, traveling the world, cheering on the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers football, or talking with friends, Cherie brought joy and energy to everything she did. She loved the outdoors-walking, hiking, swimming, boating-and cherished her annual lake trip with her children and grandchildren in Northern Wisconsin. A lifelong learner who was known by all to be handy and resourceful -- never afraid to tackle a project or solve a problem -- Cherie found beauty and meaning in both everyday life and extraordinary experiences.
Her friendships spanned generations and geographies, from grade school friends in Watertown to companions met during her extensive travels across the United States and the world. There was likely no place Cherie went where she didn't make a new friend.
Cherie will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, generous heart, and the love she gave so freely to those around her.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 9 am to 11 a.m. at Dunlap Memorial Home in Fort Atkinson, with a memorial service beginning at 11 a.m. followed by a graveside service and reception. All who knew and loved Cherie are welcome to attend and celebrate her life.
Flowers are welcome, but the family also encourages memorial donations in Cherie's honor to the Humane Society of Jefferson County or the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
