Chong Gray Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by H.D Oliver Funeral Apartments, Inc. - Laskin Road Chapel on Mar. 4, 2026.
Chong Ae (Chris) Gray (maiden name Sung) born September 13, 1939, in Seoul, Korea, passed away peacefully at home on February 8, 2026 in Virginia Beach, Va.

Chong Ae lived a life of devotion to her craft and the people she loved. A gifted seamstress, she dedicated more than 20 years to her work at Joseph A. Bank, where her skill and attention to detail left a lasting impression. Sewing was more than her profession; it was her language. She had an instinct for how things should look and fit, and she was never satisfied until every line hung just right. Even at home, her industrial sewing machines stood ready in the kitchen

She was a maker in every sense of the word. she would carefully take garments apart and rebuild them so they fit perfectly. Her hands were rarely still. If she was not sewing, she was cooking or tending to her beloved garden.

In retirement, Chong Ae found joy in her flower garden, especially her pink and red knockout roses that bloomed in front of her home. Each morning, she would step outside with a cup of coffee and care for the plants, trimming away the old so new growth could flourish.

She also expressed her love through food. She took pride in feeding those around her, preparing meals with the same attention and generosity she brought to everything she did. Her cooking, including her beloved spaghetti sauce, brought comfort to those fortunate enough to gather at her table.

Chong Ae was preceded in death by her parents and her brother. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, whose love for her spanned continents and decades; her nieces and nephew in Seoul, South Korea, whom she held close in her heart despite the distance; and her American family, including the Dranes, the Lillies, the Allens, the Lanphears, and the Grays, with whom she shared love, laughter, and many cherished visits.

Chong Ae's life was one of quiet dedication, expressed not in grand gesture but in daily acts of care, discipline, and love. Whether through the steady hum of her sewing machines, the careful tending of her roses, or the meals she prepared for others, she created beauty and comfort with her hands and her heart.

Her memory will be treasured by all who knew her. May her legacy bring comfort and peace to those who mourn her passing.
