In Loving Memory of Chris Hood Sandie Modica Gutmann
Chris Hood Sandie Modica Gutmann, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed
away peacefully on Wednesday, May 28th, 2025. Born in Queens, New York, Chris lived a life
full of love, grace, and service, later making her home in Valley Stream, Lynbrook, and Long
Beach, New York.
Chris's life was marked by devotion-to her family, her faith, and her community. She was the
cherished wife of Bill Gutmann, and was previously married to Frank Sandie and later Frank
Modica, both of whom preceded her in passing. She also had a loving sister, Pauline
Wisniewski, who passed away 7 years ago. She was a proud and loving mother to Chris-Ann
Zogas (Peter), Frank Sandie (Renee), Bill Sandie (Sean Cahill), Lynett McGrath (Larry), and
Leah Klein (Chris), and a devoted Nana to Jessica, Luke, Nicholas, Madeleine, Elizabeth, Jack,
Jacqueline, LJ, and Sophia.
A woman of many talents, Chris was known for her radiant smile and her natural ability to make
everyone around her feel welcomed and at ease. Her outer beauty matched her inner light-she
was always impeccably put together, with her hair and makeup done just so, a truly beautiful
woman in every sense of the word. Her elegance and grace left a lasting impression wherever
she went.
In her younger years, she had a passion for music and dance. Her community involvement was
wide and heartfelt-she was a proud member of St. Raymond's Church, where she served as
prefect of the Sodality. She also gave her time to St. Vincent de Paul and delivered meals to the
elderly through Meals on Wheels and FISH. For many years she partook in an organization
called the Daughters of the British Empire where she was Regent. Lastly, Chris served as a Cub
Scout mother and a Girl Scout leader, always finding ways to support and uplift the lives of
others.
An avid sportswoman, Chris found joy in ice skating, skiing, tennis, bowling, and her favorite
pastime, golf. She was a tournament chairman at The Rockville Links and enjoyed games like
Mah-jong, Canasta, Rummikub, and Bridge-often teaching others and sharing in the fun.
Her family and friends will always remember her warmth, her elegance, and the strength of her
spirit.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Chris's life at her wake on Friday, May 30th from 2–4
PM and 7–9 PM at Perry Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at St. Raymond's Church
on Saturday, May 31st at 9:30 AM, with burial to follow at St. Charles Cemetery.
She will be greatly missed
