Christine Mathews was born August 17, 1931, to the late Ed and Sudie Jones in Bessemer, AL. She departed this life peacefully at Piedmont Newnan Hospital in Newnan, GA on Monday, July 03, 2023, at 12:20 am. Christine was the Matriarch of the Jones family and outlived all her siblings.
She confessed her faith in Christ at an early age and joined the First Baptist Church in Bessemer, where she attended until moving to Pittsburgh, PA in the summer of 1955.
After moving to Pittsburgh, Christine worked for Henry Lea Hillman and his wife Elsie Hillman as a housekeeper in the big mansion on Fifth Avenue for five years. She always talked about how Mr. Hillman called her Lil' Chris when he wanted her to do something. Christine joined the Homewood Coliseum bowling league for a few years where she won numerous trophies. Christine had a passion for crocheting blankets, and has made blankets for family and friends all over the United States.
She also loved her flower and vegetable gardens. Christine was an awesome cook and baker and taught all her children her culinary secrets in the kitchen. If you knew Chris, you knew she fixed everything around the house with duct tape. Her heart's passion was her family. She loved and cared for all of them; even the grandchildren. She was an amazing aunt to many and had a love for all the surrounding neighborhood children.
Christine was united in marriage to the late Henry Mathews who preceded her in death on May 12, 1979.
She leaves to cherish her memory: eight children, Eddie Jean (Wayne) Perry, Joe Lee Turnipseed, Annetta Shelton, Valerie Halliburton, Christine (Marvin) Coburn, Marcia (Kingsley) Campbell, Henrietta Cook, and Vanessa Mathews; grandchildren, Marcia, Wayne Jr., Tony, Joe Lee III, Dionne, Benny Jr., Jaime, Charlie IV, Nichole, Marvin Jr., Alana, Karen, April, Nolan III, Stephanie, Marie, Destiny, Donovan; 32 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other family members, friends, and the great neighbors of Atlanta, GA.
A private remembrance ceremony will take place Thursday, July 20, 2023. Please contact the family for more details.
