Christine Pearson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by DeBaptiste Funeral Homes, Inc. - West Chester on Feb. 9, 2026.
Christine Bernice Pearson, 85, of Bronx, formerly of West Chester, peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2025. Born on March 22, 1940, in Princeton, she was the beloved daughter of Anita Spann and Vernon Peyton Hoagland.

Christine was educated in the West Chester Area School District and went on to graduate on May 13, 1962, from Delaware State College with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. A gifted pianist with a lifelong love of music, she used her talents to uplift others, often sharing her gift at family gatherings, church events, and community programs. During college, she proudly became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Eta Omega Omega Chapter, forming sisterhood bonds that lasted a lifetime.

Her life's work was rooted in service and advocacy for children. Christine devoted more than 50 years to educating special needs students throughout New York City, beginning at P.S. 111 Seton Falls, continuing at J.H.S. 144 Michelangelo, and concluding her career at P.S. 59 – The Community School of Technology. Her classroom was a place of patience, encouragement, and unwavering belief in every child's potential. She retired during the COVID-19 pandemic after a remarkable and impactful career.

Beyond her professional life, Christine gave generously of her time and heart. She volunteered as a den mother for both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and founded the Toybrary Foundation to ensure children had access to educational toys and resources. Her commitment to youth and community extended far beyond the classroom.

On June 30, 1967, Christine married the love of her life, Cleo E. Pearson. From this union came two beloved children, Alice Lisa Pearson and Chester Leon Pearson. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Mitchell Dunbar, Jasmine Pearson, Juliette Pearson, and Brianna Harper, each of whom brought her immense joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Vernon Hoagland Jr. and Anita Hoagland Boney. She is survived by her sister, Bonnie Hoagland, along with her children, grandchildren, extended family, and the countless students and lives she touched.

Christine's nurturing spirit, philanthropy, strength, and love will forever remain etched in the hearts of her family, friends, colleagues, and generations of students. Her legacy of music, education, and service will continue to inspire all who knew her.
