James Mooney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Craig Funeral Home on Mar. 20, 2026.
James Vernon Mooney, born May 17, 1931, in the Bronx, New York, passed away on March 17, 2026. He was the son of Francis Phillip Mooney and Violet Hoffman and was raised in Midland Beach, Staten Island, New York, and has lived in St. Augustine, Fl. since 2009, not before moving up and down the Eastern Seaboard, after retirement.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force on September 4, 1951, and was assigned to the Student Squadron/Technical Training Group. Following an honorably discharged, he was employed with Con Edison for 32 years, retiring as a company representative.

On February 25, 1957, he married Elizabeth (Betty) M Morrissey, of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, NY. He enjoyed sixty-nine (69) years of marriage and they were blessed with five children: Elizabeth Hay, Kathleen (Patric) Conroy, John, James (Beth) Mooney, and Thomas (Linda) Mooney.

Surviving are eleven (11) grandchildren and spouses: Joseph, Sean, Meghan, Caitlin, Tara, Mary Kate, Shannon, Brianna, Devin, Thomas, and Jacqueline, along with ten (10) great grandchildren: Kaitlin, Violet, Simon, Maeve, Nora, Ellie, Hazel, Tessa, Liam, and Aurora, plus two (2) more on the way.

He lived a full life, and in good times and bad, he managed to take care of all of us. We love you Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa, and we will miss your uncanny ability to be quick with a quip or a joke. …Where is your cane dad? "Able took it!"

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Marie, Francis, Violet (Babe), and Catherine and two children: Elizabeth, and John.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the New York area. Date and time to be determined.
