I didn't know Chris personally but I've heard good things about him. My son went to the College of Charleston with him. They worked out together, had classes together, and worked on projects together. My son thought a lot of him. He lost a good friend that day. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. May God give you the strength to get through this rough time.

Our hearts go out to you. Chris was a wonderful and caring young man. He was a breath of fresh air, like sunshine entering a room with that smile he wore! It was an honor to have known Chris.

Dear Bates family,
Chris was a student in my Latin class last spring. He was a wonderful student and stood out among his peers--sharp, sincere, hard-working. But mostly I remember what a polite, truly kind individual he was, both inside the classroom and in his emails and conversations with me. I wanted you to know that even though I had the pleasure of having him in my classroom for only one semester, he made an impression. Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. I am so very sorry.

Dear Donna, I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your son. From what I have read, he was a remarkable young man in every way. I cannot imagine your grief but I did want to reach out to let you know that I am keeping you in my prayers asking for God to wrap you in His arms and give you His unfailing love and strength as you face the difficult time ahead in bearing what has to be the worst loss that any parent could imagine.

Chris will be forever remembered as a kind and gentle soul, that aided those whom were unlaughable, always siding with all of God's creation. Chris, the blessings that the Creator hath bestowed upon thee did not go unused. Thank you for all you ever were to human-kind......

Chris caught for me back when I coached Little League. One time a coach from a team we'd never played before asked to speak to me about "that catcher of yours." He told me he had never seen such a high level of sportsmanship demonstrated from a kid CB's age. When one of his younger players struck out, CB told him that trying to hit the older pitchers took time and he would be able to hit them eventually. He told several players what great hits or plays they made. According to the coach, CB had a word of encouragement for every one of his players. I was proud of CB, but I was not surprised. That was CB being CB. I will never forget that conversation and I will always be grateful to CB. He taught me something that day.

Chris was a wonderful person; always so kind and considerate. One of our favorite family memories is of a Brockman Elementary birthday party. When Chris had to leave early for a baseball game, all the kids decided to just move the party to the park so they could stay together and watch him play. Everyone loved Chris.

My son, Matthew, graduated with Chris, and I was the Registrar at Flora. We both remember Chris as a very nice, personable young man. Matthew said that Chris was often in the training room when he went in to be taped for football. We both send our condolences, and will keep your family in our prayers. Ann Ulmer (Columbia, SC)
