Christopher J. Buergey, age 70, of Parma, formerly of Beaufort, South Carolina, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at the Wade Park VA facility in Cleveland.
He was born on October 6, 1955 in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
While military service was in his blood, as his father had served in the Marines, and he was born on a military base, Christopher chose to follow his own path and joined the Army instead. He was stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY and when his period of service was completed, he transferred to the Army Reserves. Once he completed his time in the Reserves, he continued his life of service to others in a new way. He became a proud volunteer with the Beaufort Water Search and Rescue, which was based out of
Port Royal, SC. During his 15 years working with them, he held the rank of 1st Mate, and for 4 years, served as second-in-command.
Even when not actively engaged with military duties, he never strayed far from his military roots as his civilian career was spent working for Paris Island Maintenance Department 22.
In Christopher's spare time, he loved getting out on his Harley and riding the road wherever it took him. He enjoyed being in his boat on the Port Royal Sound fishing, shrimping, and relaxing on the sandbar.
When he moved to Ohio three years ago to be closer to his family, he found new ways to fill his leisure time. He loved spending time in the backyard with family and friends, and he treasured simpler moments too, like playing with his grandchildren and dogs. He never lost his love of the water or his Harley either as he would also find time to ride over to the pond to watch the frogs and feed the fish.
He is survived by his children, Shannon Buergey (Anthony Soos) of Parma, and Dustin Buergey of Cleveland; his grandchildren, Christopher Buergey, Aiden Buergey, Abigal Soos, and Elizabeth Therens; two brothers, William Buergey of Watersmeet, Michigan and Stephen Buergey of Danville, Virgina; and his former wife, Marilyn Buergey.
Christopher was preceded in death by wife, Valerie Buergey in 2022; his son, Christopher Buergey in 1995; his parents, William in 1989 and Laurmel (nee James) Buergey in 2010; and his sister, Charna Lane Buergey in 1990.
Christopher had requested that his life not be mourned, but rather celebrated instead. As he hated the cold, being born and having spent most of his life in the warmth of the South, he also asked that the celebration be held when the weather would have been more to his liking! It will also be held outside, as he relished his time in the sun! His family is anticipating scheduling this for early June, at which time he will receive the full military honors earned through his many years of service to our country! The family will announce the date and time as soon as it's available.
