Christopher James Gazes, 83 of Glen St. Mary, passed from this life on Thursday, October 30, 2025 at Baptist Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. Chris was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of James C . and Ruth (Dorrity) Gazes. He would join the United States Navy and was honorably discharged as an E5. He then attended the University of South Carolina, where he received a bachelor’s in psychology, as well as a degree in business management. He would begin a career shortly after with Barnett Bank of Jacksonville, where he later became Vice President in the finance department. In 1979, Chris had a vision for a career change, obtained a contractor and broker’s license and started his own business, GF Florida Operating Alpha, Incorporated. He specialized in real estate development and worked until retirement this year.
Mr. Gazes also served on the Baker County Hospital Authority Board, Baker County Development Commission, Northeast Florida Builders Association, and the BCDC.
Chris had a love for nature and the outdoors. He had a passion for fly fishing, bass fishing, diving, hiking, hunting, motorcycle rides, and camping. He also enjoyed tinkering around and could fix just about anything. He had created his own oasis on his property in Baker County and loved to spend time admiring his life’s work. He had a heart for others and was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and family.
He is survived by his son, James Gazes of Glen St. Mary and his devoted companion, Janet Smith, who was by his side for many years. He was also a proud father to his bonus children who held a special place in his heart, Jessica (Gerald) Gonzalez, Rachael (Robert) Conrad, and David (Colette) Smith; grandchildren, Jag (Madisyn) Knabb, Jett Knabb, Jolton Knabb, Caleb Roberts, Matthew Smith, and Gianna Smith; as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2025 at 1:30 PM on his property, The Sanctuary, Sanctuary Way, Glen St. Mary, Florida.
