Christopher "Chris" Hardt, a cherished educator, dog devotee, and proud veteran, passed away on July 12, 2025, at the age of 57 in North Branch, Michigan. Born on March 8, 1968, in Gurnee, Illinois, Chris's boundless kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
He spent his early life in the suburbs of Chicago and developed a lifelong love for Chicago sports teams, notably the Bears and the Blackhawks. His family later moved to Arizona, where he would spend most of his life. Friends remember his unrepentant kindness, even as a young adult. He would go out of his way to help others and never shied away from questions about where his life was going-even when he didn't yet have the answers. Chris eventually became an Earth Sciences teacher, helping his high school students discover their own paths.
Before shaping young minds, Chris served our country with honor and distinction in the United States Army. During the first Gulf War, he was a valued member of a supply company, demonstrating the same dedication and teamwork that would later define his teaching career.
Students reminisced upon the announcement of his passing, sharing messages such as: "Mr. Hardt helped me through a hard time in my life," "Thank you for being a teacher who really cared about his students," and "He was a great teacher and a special human being." Chris cared deeply for his students and used his own life experiences to show that, while life can be difficult, there is always a path to finding your purpose.
In 2011, he left his life in Arizona after reconnecting with his high school sweetheart and followed her back to Michigan, where he developed a passion for her dogs. This adoration led him to travel to places like Hungary and various regions across the United States, always with the goal of connecting with fellow dog lovers. His adventures with his four-legged companions were among his most cherished experiences.
Chris is survived by his life partner, Doreen, and children: Zoe (Donnie) Hardt, Griffin Hardt, and Sydney MacPherson. He is also survived by his parents, Gini and Al Hardt; his brother, Alex Hardt; and a close circle of friends including Dan Gmbry, Jody Settles, Guy Stiers, and Matt Eisiminger. They will fondly remember Chris for the joy and camaraderie he brought into their lives.
Chris's unique sign-off, "peace and good eating," was more than a quirky farewell-it was a reflection of his philosophy on life. He believed in living peacefully and savoring the joys of good company and good food. Anyone who knew him could see how he lived this philosophy every day through his teaching, speech, and care.
Per Chris's wishes, a service will not be held. Please raise a toast to his memory and his dedication to helping others. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to support the dogs he loved dearly. Chris has been cremated, and arrangements have been entrusted to Jansen Family Funeral Home – Columbiaville.
