Chris Laney was involved with Cub Scout Pack 15 at St Annes Church of the Sunset as a parent and adult leader. Joel Laney his son joined as a Tiger (1st Grade) in 2002 through Bears (3rd Grade) in 2004 with 24 Cub Scouts. Chris Laney was intrigued with scouting program drawn in by Pinewood Derby since Pack 15 possessed one of the longest tracks in the Boy Scouts Golden Gate District of San Francisco. Pinewood Derby is a popular Cub Scout activity that involves transforming a block of wood into a sculptured race car no wider than 2.75 inches, no longer than 7 inches and weigh no more than 5 ounces with four round plastic wheels riding on nail axles and strapped with lead weights for mass. The race cars are led down a long track by gravity in their own guided tracks with the best timing recorded in elimination races to win trophies and bragging rights. Chris was encouraged to become a trained adult leader of the Bears since each Den needed a leader. Chris attended mandatory Boy Scouts Youth Protection and Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) designed to equip Cub Scout leaders with the knowledge and skills needed for overnight camping trips with their packs. Chris and Joel participated in Pack Night Meetings, Scouting for Food and Flag Planting at the San Francisco Presidio National Cemetery in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). Joel's sister Maria would often tag along in the Cub Scout activities. Chris will be missed by his family and the scouting community. His adult volunteer participation and mentoring strengthens youths to become good citizens. Chris exemplified the Cub Scout motto "Do your Best" a core principle, emphasizing personal growth, striving for improvement, and giving one's utmost effort in all activities.
