Christopher Erskine Pickwick, 85, of Adelphi Maryland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 19, 2025 at the Montgomery County Hospice Casey House, in Rockville, Maryland, following a short illness.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the teams at Montgomery County Hospice, Casey House, for their compassionate care.
Born in Boston, Christopher was raised in both Fitchburg and Situate, Massachusetts, by the late Dr. Erskine R. Pickwick and late Elinor Souther Pickwick. He attended the Cambridge School of Weston, Clark University and completed an MBA at Suffolk University. He spent three years in the US Army as a medical x-ray technician, a science he was introduced to growing up in his father's private x-ray practice.
Leadership positions followed, over the next years, as he was appointed the Radiology Administrator at Massachusetts General Hospital, Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan NY, as well as Childrens' National Medical Center in Washington DC. While at Childrens' Hospital, he was appointed as adjunct faculty at George Washington University, teaching Radiologic Sciences and Administration. During this period of his professional life, he volunteered his time with the American Hospital Radiology Administrators of which he served as National President in 1983-1984. In his later career, he managed two private practices, one in Anesthesiology and another in OB/GYN, for a number of years.
Volunteer work was a big part of Chris's life as well. He taught safe boating courses for the United States Power Squadron (USPS), as well as served on various committees and participated in recruitment efforts at boat shows. All of these activities brought him recognition of his time and talents for 50 years at a regional USPS meeting in March 2025. Volunteerism included activities with the Cool Spring Terrace Civic Association in his local neighborhood.
Combining leadership with volunteerism, Chris invested a lot of time on various committees at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, where he served several years as Senior Warden.
When not working, Chris spent time on the water sailing. Following the build of his own first sailboat at age 17, he found sailing challenging and participated as crew on larger boats in local races which culminated in long distance races from Massachusetts to both Nova Scotia and Bermuda. There was no hesitation to do any kind of sailing or racing. There were many fun stories about the races, the successes or lack thereof, as well as the celebrations. In 1983, Chris owned his own "big" sailboat which he and Angie sailed to NYC for the Liberty Celebration in 1986. In 1992, he changed to owning a power boat which was named Faster and Cooler for good reason. Both had many years of fun times, as well as high seas from time to time, just like life itself.
Christopher is survived by his wife, Angela Lehman Pickwick, formerly from Hagerstown, and he had been previously married to Victoria Merson Pickwick (deceased). They had two children together, Deborah M. Pickwick Sullivan, Fairfield, CT and Jeffrey E. Pickwick (deceased), as well as two grandchildren, Erin Sullivan and Tyler Sullivan. Erskine Richards Pickwick II, (Jeanie) Chris's brother, Bradenton, Florida, is his only surviving sibling. Chris was preceded by two other siblings, Charlotte Pickwick Floyd and David Blake Pickwick.
A memorial service will be held at the Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home on Saturday, June 7th at 11am. Directions are on their website - https://www.eackles-spencerfuneralhome.com
