Clayton Alexander Obituary

A disciple. A son. A father. A Papa. And always, an Aggie. Clayton "Claytie" Riley Alexander passed away peacefully in his home on January 22, 2023, after an 18-month battle with cancer. Clayton was born on October 8, 1952, to Joe and LaVonne Alexander in St. John's Newfoundland, Canada. He was the eldest of their three children. He was raised in Fort Stockton, Texas, where he graduated high school before attending Texas A&M University, Class of 1975. He started his career as an accountant, but after his daughter, Tamara was born, the family moved to Fort Stockton and he began working in life insurance and real estate. After living seventeen years in Fort Stockton, Clayton and Connie moved to Midland where he continued to work in real estate as a broker and then with Wells Fargo estates. He then went on to establish an RV park outside of Midland. An active community member, Clayton served in multiple leadership positions in Fort Stockton and Midland. He was a Boy Scouts leader, member of the Fort Stockton Jaycees, Fort Stockton ISD school board, the Rotary Club in Fort Stockton and Midland, and real estate association in Midland in which he was President for a year. Clayton was deeply involved in his church. He served as a Sunday School teacher for junior high students, senior singles, and high school students. After taking a Walk to Emmaus, he began serving on teams and rose up through to lead teams. He soon began working in the Kairos prison ministry. He and Connie worked together on bringing marriage seminars to prisoners and their families through a federal fatherhood grant, People of Principle. His work with the prison ministry led him to establishing a half-way house for newly released inmates, Stepping Stones Ministries. Here, he and the board of directors were able to help men coming out of prison become re-established in outside life while receiving religious support. He then built a church for the men to have a place to worship, Stepping Stone Church. Clayton enjoyed traveling and was always ready for the next adventure. Traveling began with his family while growing up, then with his best friend, Richard, after selling fireworks to earn the money. After starting a family he enjoyed taking them along for the ride, especially after the arrival of grandchildren. His children, and his grandchildren, were the apple of his eye. Of all the hats he wore, Daddy and Papa were his favorites. From hiking in Paisano to walking a beach in Hawaii, he wanted to make memories with them. One of his favorite shirts read Papa, the Man, the Myth, the Legend. Clayton is preceded in death by his parents Joe & LaVonne Alexander. He is survived by his wife Connie, his children Tamara Alexander and Jonathan (Monique) Alexander, sister Cary Scarbrough, brother Chris (Tracy) Alexander, and grandchildren Riley Grace Lammerts, Olivia Katherine Alexander, and Jackson Riley Alexander. There is also the Brazilian son, a former exchange student, Pedro (Antonia) Prado, and their children. A Celebration of Life will be held at Stepping Stone Church, 2400 Elkins Road, Midland, on February 10, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Stepping Stone Ministry. Arrangements are entrusted to American Heritage Cemetery Funeral Home Crematory.

Clayton and I were in the USAF Basic Training together. At the completion of training he offered me the opportunity to spend the rest of the summer with him in Ft. Stockton! That´s when this Yankee from Boston fell in love with the great Lone Star State. God bless and keep you Miss Connie! John Panarelli

Clayton and I were fish buds in Squadron [Seagram's] 7 Texas A&M Corps of Cadets in 1971-1972. None of us really knew what we were getting into nor what the next 50 years would bring. But when Clayton wrote a short note on the inside of my 1972 Aggieland [we were just a year removed from high school...and it was still cool to write notes to your friends] he had an idea. I have included a picture of what Clayton wrote. Without question Clayton has lived up to the life and standards he chose way back in 1971! With admiration for a life well lived, Kent and Nancy Bettisworth.

Clayton and were fish buddies at Texas A&M. We were in Seagrams 7. I remember he was never afraid of anything. When were Sophomores 2 we were at evening chow and 2 members of Corps Staff came upto our table and asked anyone wanted to pla a game of racquetball against them. One was the future Corps Commander. We all looked at each other all a little intimidated. All except Clay. He looked at them and said you bet me and Gray will beat you. After I picked up my jaw from the floor I sheepishly sready to move full speed ahead so i said sure. But that was Clay full of confidence and ready to move full speed ahead. I think that was because he was always a man of faith even back then. We are so sorry for your loss and know Clay will be missed. We know that he is with God and his son Jesus in Heaven feeling no pain or sorrow. Sincerely Rick and Linda Gray
