Cleora Delores (Grimes) Womack Wash, affectionately known as "Sleepy," passed away peacefully at
her home in
Kansas City, Kansas, on January 25, 2026, at the age of ninety-four, surrounded by
loved ones. A devoted mother, grandmother, and faithful servant of God, Cleora's life was a shining
example of resilience, compassion, and unwavering faith.
Born on April 2, 1931, in
Jackson, Tennessee, Cleora was the beloved daughter of Rosie Lee Lee and
Napoleon Grimes. She accepted Christ at an early age and worshipped alongside her family at Lane
Chapel CME Church in Huntersville, TN. She sang in youth choir and attended Sunday school
regularly. She graduated from Merry High School in 1947 and soon after began building the
extraordinary life that would touch so many.
Cleora married Preston Womack and moved to the Kansas City area in 1951, where the couple
welcomed seven children. She later married Henry Wash, with whom she had three more children.
Her legacy of love, dedication, and faith lives on through her family and community.
Cleora's work ethic and generosity were evident throughout her lengthy career. For 28 years she
worked in the restaurant industry, bringing joy to others through her outstanding cooking-a
passion she carried into her home as well. She later joined Gard Oil, where she worked for 16 years
before embarking on new roles as a library assistant and later as a social services case manager
with EOF, a position she held for ten years before retiring at age 79. Every chapter of her
professional life reflected her steadfast commitment to serving and uplifting others.
An excellent cook who delighted in preparing large, delicious meals for her family, Cleora often said
she was "eating good in the neighborhood." She drew immense joy from laughter, conversation, and
the fellowship of loved ones. Those who knew Cleora will remember her sharp intellect, quick wit,
and unshakable strength. She spoke her mind with honesty and empathy, and her compassionate
care for others left a lasting imprint on all whose lives she touched.
Above all, Cleora's life centered on her deep relationship with God. As an active member of St.
Andrew Missionary Baptist Church, she sang in the choir and served faithfully on the Mother Board
until her health declined. She also enjoyed attending Sunday school and BTU. She was always
excited to share her notes with the class. Her faith guided her every step, and she never hesitated to
share her love of the Lord and her rich knowledge of the Bible.
Cleora leaves behind her loving children to cherish her memory-Melvin, Preston, Rosemary, Jerroll,
Michael, Diane, Lewis, Gale, Lonnie, and stepdaughter, Pamela-as well as many grandchildren,
great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren and close family friends, Shaneka Spencer and
Brenda Proctor. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, both husbands, her son Tyrone, stepson Henry
Jr. and grandson, Lionel.
The Womack-Wash family extends our sincerest gratitude for all the thoughts, prayers, and kind
words shared during this challenging time. Your love and support have brought comfort and
strength as we honor the life of our beloved mother.
