Darryl accepted Christ at an early age and attended Greater Archview Baptist Church and moving his church membership with his mother to Union AME church in Little Rock, Arkansas.
In 1978, he graduated from Parkview High School was an all-State Football Player and was letterman for all sports including Basketball and Track and Field for the Parkview Patriots. As an all-star athlete, Darryl Mason was recruited by over 100 colleges and Universities. With his father's advice Darryl chose the University of Arkansas coached by Lou Holtz. Darryl was an Arkansas Razorback from 1978- 1981. Darryl had many highlights as an Arkansas Razorback including the following: A 67-yard punt return against the TCU Horned Frogs; An important catch in the middle of the field against Baylor University where Michael Singletary and Van McElroy knocked 4 of his teeth out and being the captain on the Arkansas Razorback Football team beating #1 Texas in 1981 a score of 42-11.
At the University of Arkansas, he pledged the Iota Tau Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity Inc. in 1980. Darryl loved coaching football was devoted, compassionate, and extremely caring for Langston University Football Team earning NAIA Divisional Championships in 2017 and 2019.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse W. Mason, Sr and Levada Levon Parker Mason. He leaves to cherish his memory his sister Patricia Mason, Chicago, Illinois, his brothers Jesse Mason (Dr. Gail Reede Jones) of Little Rock, Arkansas, Rev. C. Vernon Mason (Thelma) of New York, New York, Michael D. Mason (Sarah), Little Rock, Arkansas. His Children Derrick Deshaun Mason (Cara), Molly Galloway and Grandchildren Julian, Miles and Mason. and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. Special Relationship with Denise Walker and children of Harvey, Louisiana
Daughter Delichia Gourgis and Son Alex Gourgis III Gandchildren: Danasia, Da'sani, DyNisty, Alex IV and Daliyah Louis.
