Clifton Schaefer, known affectionately as "Clif" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026. Born on Christmas Eve in 1937, Clif lived a life marked by a sharp mind, a servant's heart, and a lifelong love for the coast of Maine.
A proud native of Maine, Clif grew up with a love for the outdoors that never left him. He attended Wesleyan College, where he also played football. Following his graduation, he served with distinction in the United States Air Force.
Clif's commitment to excellence led him to The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his MBA. This academic foundation supported his long and storied career as a Foreign Service Officer. For decades, he served the U.S. government in Latin America and Africa. While he was a diplomat by trade, he was a friend to all he met, maintaining international friendships for the rest of his life.
Despite his global travels, Clif's heart remained anchored in Maine. He cherished his vacations back home, where he could be found on the beach, enjoying the salt air and enthusiastically devouring lobsters.
At home, Clif was a "diehard" sports fan, split between his roots and his long-time home as a loyal supporter of the Boston Red Sox and the Washington Commanders. He was also a passionate gardener who found peace tending to his roses and morning glories, and he never missed the opportunity for a long walk with his dogs-having a particularly special bond with his beloved Nelson.
Clif is survived by his devoted wife, Jill; his six children, Christopher (Christine), Dan (Alexa), Maureen (Steve), Karen (John), Michael, and Rebecca (Akash); eight grandchildren Holden, Madeline, Nicholas, Annie, Sean, Zack, Catie, and Matthew; as well as his sister, Joan (Don).
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Clif's name to the Humane Society, honoring his lifelong love for his canine companions.
