Dr. Clyde A. Kyle Jr.

Dr. C. A. Kyle Jr. died in Cleveland, Tennessee on June 1, 2024, at home with his wife and family..

He was a native and lifelong resident of Bradley County except when he attended Tennessee Wesleyan College and graduated and trained at UT College of Medicine in Memphis. He regularly attended his medical school class of 1958 reunions.

His family had a rich heritage in education in Bradley County. His mother was a long-time teacher in McMinn and Bradley County. His father was principal of Charleston High School and Bradley Central High School. His father was a successful basketball coach winning numerous tournaments at Elizabethton High School including the girl’s state championship in 1928. He continued his successful career teaching championship teams at Charleston High School and Bradley Central High School. His uncle Arthur Kyle was superintendent of Bradley Schools when he died at the age of 63.

C. A. Kyle Jr. was a member of the Bradley Central High School Class of 1952 where he played football and basketball. He made all district and all regional his Junior and Senior years playing basketball. He was first string associated press all state in 1952. He set a regional record by scoring 46 points against Olive Springs in the 1952 Region 3 Finals. He was inducted into the Old Timers Hall of Fame and the Bradley County High School Basketball Hall of Fame. He was given the MVP award for District II and Region 3 Tournaments in 1952. He and Hoyte Teague were co-captains of the 1952 team that finished third in the final 4 of the State Tournament in Memphis. He played basketball for Tennessee Wesleyan College before entering medical school.

He was preceded in death by his parents Annabelle Hall Kyle and C. A. Kyle, Sr., and a brother Edwin Lowe Kyle. He is survived by his beloved wife Marion Kyle of Helena, Arkansas. He is also survived by three sons: Dr. Chip Kyle (Yvonne), Randy Kyle, and Marc Kyle (Nina). He is also survived by his loved grandchildren: Kristina (Tina), Annabelle (Anna), Nelson, Marion (Cuppie), Alex, and Michelina. He has two nieces, Dedra Grizzard and Shelly Kyle and nephew Scott Kyle.

Dr. Kyle was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College and the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. He Interned at John Gaston Hospital, did a year of General Surgery at Baroness Erlanger Hospital (where his first son, Clyde (Chip) Kyle, III was born), and did his undergraduate training at the University of Tennessee Hospitals in Memphis (where his sons Randy and Marc were born). He began his urological practice in Cleveland, TN in 1963 and practiced urology there for over 32 years. He was the first Board Certified Urologist in Bradley County and founded the Urological Corporation of Doctors Kyle, Bryan, and Jackson. He was a member of TMA (Tennessee Medical Association), AMA (American Medical Association), AUA (American Urological Association), and the American College of Surgeons. He served as Chief of Surgery of Bradley Memorial Hospital and later as Chief of Staff in 1972. As Chief of Staff he led a bitterfight against several politicians to formally obtain the five-story addition to Bradley Memorial Hospital that was partially completed in 1976 and was finished by his partner Dr. Steve Jackson in 1989.

In 1969 he persuaded his mother, Annabelle Hall Kyle, to sell 200 acres of the family farm which is now the location of the Cleveland Country Club.

He is long-time member of the Elks Lodge and the Cleveland Country Club. He served on the Boards of the Cleveland Country Club, Cleveland Family YMCA, Broad Street Methodist Church, and Wesley United Methodist Church. He was President of the Cleveland Family YMCA in 1972. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow in The Rotary Club.

After his retirement, then he, Ralph Buckner Jr., Dr. Eddie Duncan, co-founded Southern Heritage Bank in 1998. He served on the bank’s Board since its inception. He was also instrumental in development of the Cleveland Surgery Center and the Athens Surgery Center. During this time, he became an instrumented rated private aircraft pilot.

Some of the passions that he enjoyed contributing to regularly were: St. Jude’s Hospital, underprivileged children around the world, and the Humane Society of the United States.

The Remembrance of Life visitation will be conducted on Saturday, June 8, 2024, from 12:30 to 1:45pm; the Memorial Service will follow at 2pm. Both Visitation and Memorial Service will be held at the Broad Street United Methodist Church at 155 Central Ave. NW, Cleveland, TN 37311

The Interment will be held private for the family at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
