Cody Pershing Barber, 44, passed away unexpectedly at home in Gilmer, Texas on May 5, 2022. He was born on November 3, 1977 in Tallahassee, Florida to Keith Dwight and Carol Ann Herr Barber.
A life long member and return missionary of the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints. He was called by a member of the first presidency of the quorum of the 12 apostles to a serve a two-year mission in Budapest, Hungry.
Cody has been an avid reader and sports enthusiast throughout life. He loved all kinds of books, authors and poets, and read his scriptures regularly. It's been said he has so many books that one of his aunt's will be donating several as a memorial donation in his name to the public library in Bristol Florida, sometime in the near future.
Cody really enjoyed watching baseball and a good ol WWE smack down from time to time. He loved music from classical/ jazz to Aerosmith and it's safe to say he loved the doobie brothers and so much more. Cody enjoyed many past-time activities, ping pong, bowling, black jack, playing guitar, he was also an avid (video) gamer.
Cody served 16 years as a Correctional Officer for the State of Texas in various positions and facilities. He was a delight to be around! His greatest attribute was one of humility. He had a meek spirit about him, but not lacking strength. He loved to joke with family and friends. His intellectual mind, his willingness to choose the right, his kind and quick witted spirit, the enthusiasm he had when he was enthralled in conversation, especially those of tit for tat humor. Cody's laugh along with the sound of his voice and his great-big-bear hugs and his smile, his big smile will be missed the most. Cody had a huge heart and loved his family so deeply.
He is survived by his loving parents: His father, Keith Dwight Barber (Madaline) of Gilmer, TX and his mother, Carol Ann Herr Barber of Tucson, AZ. His partner in crime (around the house) throughout his childhood, Ginger Nicole Gamble (Corey) of Tucson, AZ Nicholas Barber of Phoenix, AZ, Lauren Schmidt (Andrew) and one precious nephew, Colton Schmidt of Columbia, Alabama. Lincoln Barber of Kansas City Missouri, and many loving aunts, uncles, and memorable cousins, Whom he has shared fond memories of throughout his life.
He is preceded in death by his father's parents, grandparents John Pershing and Delcie Mae Barber of Bristol Florida, along with a handful of close Barber relatives whom are thought of and missed greatly. He is also preceded in death by his mother's parents, grandparents Harold and June Herr of St Petersburg, FL.
Funeral services for Cody will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1122 Pine Street, Gilmer, TX 75644, where a viewing will be held one hour prior to the services. Interment will follow the services in the Kelsey Cemetery, Kelsey, Texas.
Flowers may be received through one of Gilmer's Local Florist.
However, in lieu of flowers Cody's father has graciously requested, if one may choose to do so, to please consider making a charitable donation for the General Mission Fund or even the local Ward Mission Fund to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. By means of doing so may help afford those whom have a desire to serve their mission but are without financial means to pay all or partial costs the cause. This offers young men and women, just like Cody to serve a full time mission where the Lord sees fit to call. This can be done in person during Cody's Viewing Time or on the church's website: www.churchofjesuschrist.org.
