Connie Johns Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smith Funeral & Cremation Care on Jan. 30, 2026.
Connie Jo McCarty-Johns was born on January 13th, 1978, in Morgantown, West Virginia, and passed away peacefully at WVU Medicine - J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital on Friday, January 30th, 2026.

She was preceded in death by her father, Scott McCarty; her brothers, Philip and David McCarty; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She is survived by her loving mother, Marlene McCarty; her beloved daughter and pride and joy, McKenzie Johns; her sister-in-law, Cheryl McCarty; nephews Elijah and Josiah McCarty; her aunt and uncle, Kathy and Mark Switzer; her uncle and aunt, John and Lynn Hines; her aunt Sandy Hines; her aunt Penny Hines; her aunt Enie Dugan; her aunt Teresa Nichols and many cherished cousins.

To know Connie was to love her. She had an unwaveringly positive outlook on life and truly lived the way Christ called us to be-slow to anger and quick to love. Being a mother was Connie's greatest joy, and her daughter McKenzie was the center of her world. Connie loved all children as if they were her own and found deep purpose in her work with children from ages 2 through 8th grade at St. Francis Central Catholic School. She often spoke fondly of her time there, the children she worked with, and the close friendships she formed with parents and staff.

Everything Connie did was filled with genuine love, kindness, and compassion. She fought a long and courageous battle and is now finally at rest in Heaven. She was the closest thing to an angel on earth, and now she has gained her permanent wings.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Hospice team at WVU Medicine for their compassionate care during Connie's final days; to Dr. Auber and the entire staff at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center; and to Dr. Somers and her pain management team for their dedication and support.

Friends may join the family to honor Connie's life and legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Ave., Westover (304-292-9494) on Sunday, February 1st from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm, and again on Monday, February 2nd from 11:00 am until 12:00 noon, at which time Catholic Funeral Rites will be offered by her cousin, Father Andy Switzer. Following the funeral service, Connie will be laid to rest at the Pisgah Cemetery on Smithtown Rd.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the funeral home to assist the family with her final expenses, and for future support of her daughter McKenzie. Donations may be made either by calling the funeral home at 304-292-9494, or online by going to Connie's memory page from the funeral home's website, https://www.smithfcc.com/obituaries/Connie-Jo-Mccarty-Johns?obId=47124827, and by clicking on the green "Donate Now" icon.
