Conrad Winowski Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Freeman Funeral Homes - Freehold on Jan. 24, 2026.
Conrad Winowski, 76, of South Amboy, NJ, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Born in Oxford, England, Conrad would migrate to the United States at the age of 2 with his family who were displaced after WWII. New Jersey would become the place they call home.
While in high school he would take a job at Dean Floor Covering. This was the first step into what would become his life's work. In 1987, he opened Carpet Yard in Freehold, NJ where he would establish himself amongst the most respected in the industry.
He was extremely proud of being an American, as well as his Polish heritage. Always one of the most sharply dressed in the room, you would often see him zipping around town in his Porsche smoking his favorite cigars. He loved doo-wop music and enjoyed reminiscing about the good ole days singing on street corners with his band "Conrad's Comrades". An avid hockey fan and NY Rangers season ticket holder, he reached the pinnacle in 94' watching his Blueshirts lift Lord Stanley. It was around this time "Coach" would form the River Rats, one of the most successful inline hockey teams at the time. He loved talking to people everywhere he went and always had a story or joke to tell. He had a strong love for animals, you'd often hear him saying, "he likes them better than people". Dukes was truly a one-of-a-kind man that was loved by many and will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Veronica Lee; his sons, Conrad "CJ" Jr. and his wife Nikki, Jason Conrad, and Justin Conrad; his three beloved grandchildren Kevin Conrad, Emilee Rose and Chase Kingston; and his brother Richard. He was predeceased by his daughter Kathy Jean.
A man of great pride, Conrad would joke saying how he didn't want anyone looking down on him when it was his time. We intend on honoring his wishes, and instead will take him to the place he loved more than anywhere, Carpet Yard. He will continue to watch over and guide his sons as they continue to carry on the company he worked so hard to build. We invite all that hold Conrad dear to come celebrate his life at his final resting place. Join us at Carpet Yard, 3475 Route 9 North in Freehold, NJ on Thursday January 29th from 4:30PM to 7:30PM.
