Constance Cleaves Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Winthrop on Mar. 10, 2026.
Wayne - Constance Jean Cleaves, 77, of Kent's Hill Road, died peacefully on March 2, 2026 at Maine General Hospital with her family by her side.

Connie was born in Millinocket, Maine on October 21,1948, the daughter of the late Edmond and Lucille (Walls) Gallant. She was predeceased as well by her brothers, John and Michael Gallant.

Connie graduated from Stearns High School in 1967. On August 28, 1972, Connie married Arthur Cleaves in Millinocket.

Her working career was spent as a teacher's aide, with most of that time at Manchester

Elementary School in Manchester, Maine. She was known as a champion of all students, but had a special gift for working with students with special needs. Connie was famous at MES for being the set designer and builder of amazing props for years of school musicals. Outside of work, Connie enjoyed her pets, loved horseback riding, hiking with her dogs and camping with Art in their 5th wheel. She was an avid Barry Manilow fan, travelled all over the country to see his concerts and even flew to London to see him. Her greatest memory was being able to take the stage and sing with her idol. Her "Barry friends" will miss her dearly. Connie loved her family and was the force behind bringing everyone together for holidays and cook outs. Her children and grandchildren loved making and decorating her sugar cookies at Christmas time. She was a true cheerleader for all of them at sporting events and any other activities.

She is survived by her loving husband Art Cleaves of Wayne, daughter Rachael Emerson and her partner Eric Michaud, Rachael's children Nora and William Emerson, Connie's son Matthew Cleaves and former daughter in law Becky Cleaves and their children Olivia, Molly and Fiona. She leaves several nieces, nephews, cousins and sisters-in-law. She is further survived by her dear friend Linda Morin.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Roberts Funeral home in Winthrop. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared on the funeral home website www.KHRFuneraalHomes.com.
