Constance "Connie" Sloan, 87, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025, in Bloomfield NJ.
Connie led a remarkable, caring, giving life as a mother, and as a very successful creative entrepreneur. Connie was always guided by faith and family and her dedication as a mother. Connie was incredibly accomplished, though she always thought her greatest creative achievement was as a mother of her three sons, Peter, Scott and Dave.
Connie was born on February 21, 1938, in Manhattan, NY, to Henry and Fairlie Cann. Connie was raised with her older brother, Ross, and younger sister, Betsy, in Ridgewood, NJ where she grew up and attended high school. During her childhood years, Connie's creativity was deeply influenced by her mother who was an accomplished watercolor artist.
Connie also drew creative inspiration from the many summer and fall days that she and her family spent at the family homes in both Waitsfield and Halifax Vermont.
Connie attended Centenary University, where she received an AA degree in Merchandising/Psychology. After graduation, Connie courageously worked and lived in NYC, where she worked as an executive secretary at McCann Erickson advertising. During her tenure at McCann Erikson is where Connie met her eventual husband, Peter Hamilton Sloan. After their wedding in 1962, they moved to Montclair, New Jersey to raise their family.
Connie was an exemplary mother while raising her sons, and fostered an education that was full of creativity, curiosity, and independence. As a mother, Connie was engaged in the PTA, was a leader in Cub Scouts, and regularly volunteered to teach art, knitting, and cooking classes. Connie always had amazing art projects going on across the dining room table. Connie loved spending time with her family and creating memories. Connie loved taking the family to spend time at the farm in Vermont, to Deer Lake NJ, to the Outer Banks in NC, and to so many other places and adventures! These joyful moments will always be cherished. Connie did an amazing job of leading her sons to follow her footsteps as a driven, independent, creative thinker who leads with kindness and compassion.
In 1976 Connie shared one of her many creative talents with the world and published her book "Your House in Needlepoint" (which is part of the Library of Congress). Connie innovated the idea of translating a photo of one's home into a needlepoint canvas that expressed the detail and charm of the house. This was an enormously proud moment for Connie and her family, and this opened up a whole new chapter in her life. In 1977 Connie leaned on her creative and entrepreneurial spirit and opened her own knitting/craft/needlepoint store called Connie Sloan's Needle Craftique in Upper Montclair, NJ, where she became a creative community fixture and recognized designer. Along with running her store, Connie was regularly commissioned by high profile clients such as Vouge Knitting and Ralph Lauren for her sweater and hat designs. Connie's business flourished until she sold her store in 1989. After selling her store and separating from her husband, Connie moved to Verona, NJ where she lived for 35 years and continued to thrive in her creative and spiritual life. During these years Connie continued to create and design while working as an Associate Producer for Trivue Entertainment and then as an Advertising Executive for Worrall Community Newspaper. Notably during these years, Connie was a very dedicated member of Unity of Montclair. As a member, Connie served in many capacities including as an usher, a devoted teacher of the Course in Miracles each week for 27 years (until the pandemic caused her to stop), President of the Board of Trustees for two/three years, and a participant in the weekly on-line Soul Connection gathering during the pandemic. Connie was beloved by the Unity family and Connie's spiritual contributions will always be remembered at the church. Connie spent the last years of her life at the Job-Haines Home in Bloomfield, where she created new friendships and was cared for with grace by the amazing staff.
Connie is survived by her sister Betsy (her husband Ed); by her beloved three sons, her grandchildren and great grandchildren; Scott (his wife Tracey, and their children Peyton and Samantha); Dave (his wife Deborah and their children Garrett, Gage and Nola); Peter (his wife Emily and their children Nicholas, Atticus, Alexander, Tobias, Quentin, and Genevieve; and their grandchildren Hugo, Sonny, Penelope, Lily, Fia and Theo).
Connie touched the hearts of so many people with her beautiful smile, and she will always be remembered for her warmth, creativity, and kindness. Connie will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family and all who knew her.
