Constance A. Tombs
Amherst, MA - Constance Anne Tombs (91), known as Connie, peacefully passed away on February 17, 2026, at her home in the Amherst Arbors, where she had resided for the past two years.
Born May 31, 1934, in
Greenfield, MA to Yvonne and Joseph A. Jubb, Connie grew up on Conway Street and attended Greenfield Public Schools, graduating in 1952. She cherished lifelong friendships with many of her classmates.
In 1949, while working as a playground counselor, she met Robert Tombs and instantly knew he was the one with whom she would share her life. They were married on November 29, 1952. Their early years of marriage were spent in
Indianapolis, IN and at Fort Benning GA while Bob served in active duty. Connie worked as a telephone operator at N.E. Telephone, Indiana Bell and Deerfield Academy upon returning to Greenfield in early 1955.
Connie devoted the next two decades to raising her five children. She was active in Girl Scouting and was an enthusiastic "hockey and baseball Mom". Some of her fondest memories were of spending entire summers with the children at the family cottage on the coast of Rhode Island. There she enjoyed days full of beach time, swimming, boating, fishing and entertaining friends and family every weekend.
Connie and her husband purchased Snow's Ice Cream on School Street in Greenfield in 1961. At first, Connie worked as a waitress in the dairy bar. In 1972, when Bob took a job as Greenfield School Business Administrator, Connie took over running the dairy. She managed the office but also spent a few days each week making ice cream, working the production line and deep freeze with the crew. Connie never lost her love for enjoying her "daily ice cream treat". In 1978, when they sold Snow's, Connie went to work at Farrell's Insurance Agency and later at Finn's. She took many courses and eventually earned her license to act as an individual insurance broker.
Their love of the ocean drew them to move to
Harwich, MA in 1989. Connie worked at Mahoney & Wright Insurance until her retirement in 1996. That is when she discovered her passion for being a quilter. She was very active in Bayberry Quilters and won many ribbons and awards for her beautiful pieces. Over the years she made hundreds of quilts, donating many to veteran's homes and the quilt bank of Cape Cod. Her creativity also bloomed in her magnificent flower gardens, out of which she was always sharing seeds and off-shoots.
In 2009 Connie returned home to her beloved Greenfield. She resided on Adams Road with her husband until his death shortly after their 69th wedding anniversary. During these later years, she stayed busy with weekly quilting gatherings in Northfield.
Connie found great joy in watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow. She cherished every moment that she shared with each one of them. After Bob's passing, Connie moved to Arbors Assisted Living in Greenfield and then eventually to Amherst.
Connie is survived by her five children: Nancy Wood (Gill, MA), Susan Tombs (Tuners Falls, MA), Rosemary Bache and husband Timothy (
Greenfield, MA), Robert Tombs Jr. and wife Susan (Gill, MA) and Capt. Stephen Tombs (North Kingston, RI). Connie also leaves nine grandchildren: Jeffrey Bache (Jessica), Jennifer Bache, Tara McCarthy (Nate Isles), Michael Tombs (Kate), Katelyn Hill (Nate), Joshua Tombs (Talia), Zachary Tombs (Breeann), Callie Tombs, and Madison Tombs. Connie is also survived by seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Connie also leaves two sisters: Janice Newton of Northfield and Cheryl Jubb of Greenfield as well as brother in-law Edward Tombs, sister-in-law Shirley Tombs and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, parents, and brother Lawrence Jubb.
The family so appreciates the loving care Connie received from Judy's Angels Care, Beacon Hospice and the Reflections staff at the Amherst Arbors.
