Cora Gail Johnson, 88, died thankfully on Mothers' Day, May 11, 2025. She will be buried in the Carey Cemetery next to her first husband, Harold Trent.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 17, 2025 at the Carey Baptist Church in Carey, Texas with G.J. Walton officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the Carey Cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Friday, May 16, 2025 at Johnson Funeral Home.

Cora Gail "Tootie" Gunn was born at home on October 17, 1936, to Sallie and Houston Gunn, the fourth of five children. Their farm was in Motley County, Texas, not far from Briscoe County, between Flomot and Gasoline. She grew up on several farms around Flomot, and attended school there, graduating in 1954. That fall she married Harold, who was from Carey, in Childress County, and they spent most of their life there, raising cotton and kids. After retirement, they moved to the Sandia Mountains of New Mexico, where he died.

After about 10 years, Cora Gail met up with an old school friend, Rex Johnson. They soon married, and she moved back home to Texas, working a lot with the Turkey Gemboree, where they played in the band until times changed a bit too much. They also entertained in nursing homes until the Covid Pandemic interfered.

Cora Gail wrote her life history in poems, then wrote a book about Harold's lifetime of dealing with a bipolar problem, also including poems. She led a very happy, interesting life!

She is survived by hubby Rex Johnson, sister Mary Elizabeth Walling, four offspring, Joe Trent and wife Rhonda of Lubbock, Molly Trent Smith and husband Tony of Quitaque, Vinita Trent Sinclair and husband Ed of Front Royal, Virginia, son-in-law Tom Stewart of Missoula, Montana, and son Jay Trent of Las Cruces, NM, seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, plus a few "adoptees", and many, many friends. Hopefully few enemies?

She was preceded in death by her dear daughter Peggy Trent Stewart, and grandson Trevor Trent.
