Cora Thelma Powell

Cora Thelma (Self) Powell, age 96, a longtime Chockie, Stringtown area resident and a recent Broken Arrow, OK resident for the past 2 years, was born on Sunday, September 12, 1926, to James and Mary (Griggs) Self, at Chockie, OK. Cora passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at Broken Arrow, OK. She attended Limestone Gap High School and was trained to be a nurse's aid and home health worker. Cora worked as a clerk at The Friendly Store in Atoka, also working in health care and owning and operating a laundry in Stringtown. She married James Warren Powell on Wednesday, February 14th, 1945 at Atoka, OK. Cora was a member of the Stringtown Baptist Church, later the Daysprings Church and Victory Life. She was very active in the Senior Citizens Center and worked on the Atoka County Election Board. Cora was the #1 Fan of the Stringtown Tigers, and was the best sideline referee there ever was. She attended every sports event she could. Cora enjoyed being a mother and a grandmother most of all.
Cora is survived by her children, Jim Powell and wife Denise of Noble, OK, Anthony Powell and wife Margie of Sherman, TX, Diane Inman and husband Mark of Broken Arrow, OK; daughter in law, Donna Powell of Flower Mound, TX; grandchildren, Shawn Powell of Sherman, TX, Angela Sugg of Palm Springs, CA, Tony Powell of Oklahoma City, OK, Shannon Brin of Sherman, TX, Jenna Powell of Norman, OK, Kelli Saitas and husband Matt of Broken Arrow, OK, Erin Pierce and husband Justin of Flower Mound, TX, Tyler Inman and wife Jaci of Broken Arrow, OK; 13 great grandchildren; brothers, Johnny Self and wife Zelma of Stringtown, OK, Royal Dean Self of Oklahoma City, OK; long time dear friend and 4th son, Chester Neal of DFW, TX; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and many dear and loved friends
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary (Griggs) Self; husband, James 'Shorty' Powell; son, David Powell; grandson, James Powell; brothers, Jackie Self, Farris Self; sisters, Inez Knight, Bertha Lewis, BD Manion
