Courtney Matthew "Matt" Mondell

Courtney Matthew Mondell, 'Matt', age 67, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 15, 2025 with family and friends at his side.
Matt was born in Albemarle County, VA, son of the late Bertie Ann Courtney and William Mondell. Shortly after graduating from Glasgow High School, he went on to serve in the US Navy. After returning home from the service, Matt started a family, became involved in his community, and found work in transportation, driving hazmat trucks and school buses for most of his career.
He loved music deeply and was constantly to be found listening to it as well as making it. He had an abiding passion for literature of various kinds, with an appreciation of both humor and wit that was of particular note. He would engage anyone and everyone in debate and would argue with himself if necessary. His greatest love was in sharing time with those he cared about; that love was enjoyed by so many and will not soon be forgotten. His legacy is carried on by those who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Matt was also predeceased by his daughter, Carrie Mondell. Matt is survived by his wife, Patricia Mondell; son, Matthew Mondell; stepson, Jeff Miller; grandchildren, Alexandra Miller, Jeffrey Miller, Mason Shankie; life partner, Tamra Schaber; sisters, Stephanie Green and Allison Powers; and numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends whom he loved. He was a friend of Bill W.
A visitation for Matt will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808, where friends and family may call from 10 am to 11 am, with a celebration of life following at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Matt's name to The Ministry of Caring at 115 East 14th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
