Craig Eugene Falter, lovingly known as "Poppy", passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 8:12 a.m. at HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital. He was 54 years old.
Born on February 25, 1971, in Carrollton, Illinois, Craig was a proud graduate with a high school diploma and earned his Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification, reflecting his lifelong dedication to aviation.
Craig served his country with honor in the United States Air Force from January 1993 until 2005. Following his active duty, he continued his service as a Civil Service aircraft mechanic from 2006 until his passing in 2025. He was highly respected in his field and deeply passionate about his work. Those who knew him knew that asking Craig a question about his trade meant settling in for an in-depth, 30-minute masterclass. His knowledge, dedication, and love for aircraft shone especially bright during informal tours at the Air Force Armament Museum, tours that were more insightful than any you could pay for.
Throughout his military career, Craig received numerous honors, including:
Air and Space Commendation Medal
Air and Space Achievement Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters)
Air and Space Outstanding Unit Award (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters)
AF Good Conduct Medal (with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters)
Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters)
National Defense Service Medal (with 1 Service Star)
Craig married the love of his life, Leslie Wiseman, on February 2, 2011, in their home in Fort Walton Beach, where they built a beautiful life together. Outside of work, Craig was a man of many passions. He loved gaming, especially Dungeons & Dragons, Call of Duty, and time on Xbox. He cherished time with family and friends, often found grilling by the pool or enjoying simple moments as "Poppy" to his beloved grandchildren. He was a proud member of Oakland Baptist Church, where his faith and fellowship enriched his life and those around him.
Craig is survived by his loving wife of fourteen years, Leslie Wiseman; parents, David (Brenda) Falter and Myra (Denis) Maxwell; sons, Christopher Michael Brargeman, Michael Folta, and Peter Folta; his grandchildren, Raleigh, Kyleigh, Nataleigh, and Charleigh Folta; siblings, Christy (Pete) Olroyd, Charlie (Noonie) Falter, and Brad (Risa) Falter; as well as nineteen beloved nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at Oakland Baptist Church at 118 Wright Parkway in Fort Walton Beach, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends starting at 12:00 p.m., while interment will immediately follow at Beal Memorial Cemetery with military honors. A fellowship meal will be served at the church following the committal service.
