Craig Spooner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rose & Hughes Funeral Home on Mar. 27, 2026.
Craig James Spooner, 78, of Amsterdam NY, passed away March 27th, 2026 with his family by his side after a long illness.

Craig was born August 29th, 1947, and was the son of Florence Rusnica Spooner, and Harold L Spooner.

A lifelong resident of Amsterdam, Craig attended Amsterdam schools, entering the US Navy when he was 17, and upon turning 18, Craig proudly went into the US Marine Corps, and was deployed to Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

Craig, and his brother Wes (Bub) grew up very close, and were often referred to as "The Spooner Boys". Upon Craig's return from Vietnam, He and Wes embarked on many adventures together including raising a little hell, driving trucks, and then opening up their first business together "Amsterdam Radiator Service". It was during this time where Craig was able to feed his lifelong love affair with fast hot rods, and motorcycles. Craig, and Wes then closed that garage, and went to work for Amsterdam Memorial Hospital, Fiberglass Industries, and then reopened the garage on Lower East Main Street. Upon selling that business in 1989, Craig then became a NYS Corrections officer before retiring in January 2003.

Above all, Craig loved spending time with his son Michael, Daughter in law Lisa, his brother Wes, and his closest friends. Craig enjoyed going to the Drag races, Dirt track races, car shows and watching NASACAR. He also enjoyed just jumping into the current Hot Rod of choice, or onto a motorcycle to simply just wander. He especially enjoyed simple homemade meals, and gatherings with his family, and just spending time with those closest to him.

Craig is survived by his beloved son Michael, daughter-in- law Lisa, his closest friend, and brother Wes (Karen), and nieces, Lisa, and Courtney (Denver), along with a fairly large extended family. He was predeceased by his mother Florence, and father Harold (Los Angeles CA).

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Evergreen Commons of East Greenbush NY, for their care, and support of Craig.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at Rose & Hughes Funeral Home, 200 Church Street, Amsterdam, NY on Wednesday, April 1st, 2026 from 5:00PM until 7:00PM.

Burial will take place at The Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville, NY with US Marine Corps honors and Cemetery honors on Thursday, April 2nd, 2026 at 11:00AM.
