Curtis graduated from Picayune Memorial High School before joining the United States Army, where he proudly served during the Korean War. In 1953, he married Shirley, the love of his life, and together they built a beautiful life and raised two children, Cynthia and Brian. Curtis worked for many years as a welder, a trade he took great pride in and one that reflected his strong work ethic and dedication to providing for his family.
Curtis enjoyed baseball-especially Atlanta Braves baseball-fishing, gardening, and just about anything that allowed him to be outdoors. He also had a special place in his heart for his two grandpups, Lola and Pixie, who brought him endless laughter and joy. Above all else, however, he cherished his grandchildren. He never missed a moment-whether it was attending countless dance recitals, marching in parades with his granddaughters, cheering at baseball games for his middle grandson, or going on Scavenger hunts with his oldest grandson.
Then came the one he didn't know he needed-the youngest grandson, Braxten, the undeniable apple of his eye. Whether we want to admit it or not, Curtis loved Braxten with everything in him. As Braxten grew up playing travel baseball and school ball, PawPaw was there for nearly every game, missing only the trip to Cooperstown, New York. Along the way, the families from Braxten's travel ball days became family too. They treated Curtis like their own PawPaw, and he loved each and every one of them dearly.
Later in life, his great-grandchildren brought a renewed skip to his step. He rarely, if ever, told them no and loved them deeply. Curtis also held his nieces, Anita and Manchester, very close to his heart and loved them dearly. In addition, he was blessed with adopted grandchildren, Ashley,Jules and Alex, and adopted great-grandchildren Cameron, Aaliyah, Ava, and Aria. Not a day went by that Curtis didn't ask about them. He treasured watching them play ball whenever he had the chance.
Curtis's love for his family, his country, Braves baseball, his work, and even his beloved grandpups knew no bounds, and his legacy lives on through the many lives he touched.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Carter and Virginia Smith Carter; his wife of 57 years, Shirley Asher Carter; son, Brian Keith Carter; brothers, Charles Carter and Clinton (Mildred) Carter; and sister, Camellia Haddox.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Cynthia Dianne Carter; grandchildren, Michael (Amanda) England, Mandi Lee, Tiffany (Eugene) Cheramie, Angela England, Brian "Bubba" (Cassandra) Carter, and Braxten Carter; great grandchildren, Hunter, Cloey, CJ, Aiden, Layla, Emily, and Warren; brother, Calvin Carter; and sister in law, Norma Carter.
