Curt was born in Roseau Minnesota where he attended school and helped his parents on their farm. This is where his love grew for animals, especially for horses and dogs. Curt played hockey throughout his high school career. A tradition 3 of his sons continued. He enlisted in the Army after graduation and was an MP in California after boot camp. He enjoyed riding his Indian Motorcycle on the beaches of California. He survived a vehicle accident at 20 years old after rolling his 1948 Chevy 5 times after a tie rod fell off. He met and married Winifred Dunham and together they welcomed 4 children. He later went on to marry Joanne Schlussler Smith. He gained 4 stepchildren and together they welcomed a son. Although Curt was a farmer at heart, he also worked as a dump/semi-truck driver and in his younger years he worked in Lake of the Woods logging camp with his Uncle Adolf. When Curt wasn’t working, he enjoyed his beloved horse Abby, hunting elk with her in Colorado, trips to the cabin and the annual deer hunt here at home. Spending time with his grandchildren always brought joy to his heart. In 1975 Curt re-enlisted in the Army Reserve until he retired as a Sergeant First Class. After a long battle with cancer, in Curt’s loving care, Joanne passed away in 2000. Curt went on to marry Cherilyn Shaffer who blessed him with 3 more stepchildren. Cheri was tireless in her care for Curt as he battled cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and heart disease.
