Curtis Koch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 21, 2025.
Curtis James Koch, born February 5th 1960, in Sandusky, Ohio passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 17th 2025 in Naples, Florida.

He graduated from Miami University and Capital University Law School. He was an accomplished attorney, practicing in Norwalk and Sandusky for 40 years and was closely involved with the Ohio Bar Association and the Ohio Public Defender's Office. He served as the president of the board of the Albert G. & Olive H. Schlink Foundation. Under his guidance, the foundation grew and gave back to the community more than it ever had before.

His athletic pursuits encompassed running, cycling, and swimming, culminating in a Half Iron Man race completed in 2012, as well as skiing and sailing. Some of his most beloved traveling destinations included the Outer Banks, the Cayman Islands, and the Italian countryside. He loved reading the great classics of historical literature and watching his favorite sports teams, the Browns, the Guardians, and the Buckeyes.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janet "Bitty" Koch, his two children, Michael Koch and J Cranston, two children-in-law, Meghan Murray Koch and Saryn Cranston, and his three brothers, Mark, Matthew, and Brian Koch.

His Celebration of Life will be an intimate gathering of family and close, personal friends occurring this Sunday, April 27th. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to one of the causes that Curtis held close to his heart in life, Firelands Habitat for Humanity, Victory Kitchen, or the Sandusky Junior Sailors via https://gofund.me/31a45c0e.

Became friends with Curtis our freshman year at Miami. He lived down the hall and we had many good times together. Always a straight shooter and fun loving guy. I had the good fortune to catch up with him recently at a get together with a number of guys who became friends at school. So saddened to hear of his passing. My deepest condolences to Bitty and the family. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Curtis was a friend and fraternity brother; always a really good guy (we used another term then, but it don´t matter). I know he will be missed by all who knew him, and I pass my prayers and condolences to Bitty and family. I loved seeing (and living vicariously through) his many posts that always showed fun, love, and a love of life. We´ll miss him.

To the Koch family, I first met Curtis when we were both 4 years old, as neighbors on Jeannette Drive. Our family moved away from Sandusky in the early 70's but I reconnected with Curtis again thru Facebook several years ago. He was exactly the same person, fun, smart, witty and caring, and enjoying a life well lived. We shared stories on charitable giving, travel, great places to visit and stay, and always wished each other Happy Birthday. He said I was his "oldest friend". Im shocked and saddened by his sudden loss and wanted to send heartfelt condolences to you all, especially his family. He adored you all.

Dear Koch family:
Please accept our most heartfelt condolences for your loss. Curtis was a valued colleague and always full of good humor. He is the only attorney in Huron County with whom one could discuss Russian literature. His Bar Assoc. minutes, from when he served as secretary, were funny and clever. He never took himself too seriously. He will be missed.
Sincerely, Kate (Wieczorek) & Harold Freeman
