Curtiss Johnson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Helgeson Funeral Home - Warroad on Dec. 30, 2025.
Curtiss L. Johnson, 87 of Warroad MN passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025 in the presence of his family at the Lakewood Care Center in Baudette MN. He was born October 26, 1938 in Warroad MN to Rubin and Gladys Johnson.

He graduated from Warroad High School in 1956 and immediately began his journey towards being an electrician working in International Falls. In 1958 he joined the U.S. Navy where he received his electrical training and served as an electrician on the USS Nerues, USS Sperry, USS Anchorage and USS El Paso. His duty stations included Virginia, Mississippi, Oregon, Washington, Japan and California. Due to his skill, dedication and hard work, he was advanced to the Directorship of Electrical Schools in Great Lakes IL. He saw active duty serving in Vietnam and earned several medals throughout his career. He retired with the distinguished rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 in 1978.

Curt returned to Warroad and started Johnson's Electric, providing many businesses and homes in the community with quality electrical service for 40+ years. He eventually took over the family farm while running his electrical business for many years.

He enjoyed farming, and having his children help him with various farm projects, polka dancing, building furniture, golfing, watching old Westerns and his grandchildren playing sports. He planted cedar, pine, maple, apple and birch trees on his farm and the Mattson farm. He especially liked the red maples. Curt was described by those who knew him as a straight shooter, kind, helpful, positive man with the best grin ever. All his grandchildren loved riding in Grandpa's truck where he kept a stash of peanut M&M's in easy reach.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sharon Laznicka; his four children, Patty Herron (Golden Valley MN), Daphne Johnson (Grand Forks ND), Robert (Karin) Johnson (Warroad MN) and Candy (Tom) Almquist (Victoria MN); his stepchildren, Suzanne and Scott Laznicka; his grandchildren, David Herron, Nick (Sarah) Herron, Jodi Herron, Jana (Nathaniel) Hodgson, Ernie Blackburde, Tristan and Tahra Johnson, Sarah Almquist (Brett Dvorak) and Ben Almquist. Step Grandchildren, Erick Laznicka (Ashley) and Mitch Laznicka, and great grandchildren Weston Herron, Eden Herron, Finn Herron, Damian Hodgson, Delta Hodgson and Ila Dvorak, step-great-grandchild Elowyn, and his sisters, Janet (Skip) Milender (Thief River Falls MN) and Sally Jorgenson (Shakopee MN). He was preceded in death by his parents Rubin and Gladys Johnson, sister IdaMae Northrup, brothers-in-law, Warner Northrup and Fred Jorgenson and former wife of 24 years Rose (Farmer) Johnson, mother of his children.

His family invites all who knew Curt to a Memorial Service that will be held on January 9, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Zion Lutheran Church in Warroad, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
