MALTA Beloved wife, mother, and 'Nanny', Cynthia "Cindy" Ellen Ferjanec (Kane), of Ballston Spa, NY, passed away at home with her family on Tuesday, October 7th, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Cindy was born on September 18th, 1941, at Little Falls Hospital. Growing up, she was always a social butterfly – a quality that followed her into adulthood. She attended Saint Mary's Academy in Little Falls, NY, and graduated in 1959. After graduation, she spent time at Saint Joseph's Infant Home of Child Nursing in Troy, where she completed a certificate program with the nuns and cared for orphaned and abandoned children. She then went on to work at Syracuse Hospital, serving in various roles before life took her in a new direction.
In 1962, Cindy met the love of her life, Greg Ferjanec, and the two were married the following year at Saint Mary's Church in Little Falls, NY. After living briefly in New Jersey, they eventually settled in the Capital District, making their permanent home in Clifton Park, where they raised their family. Cindy treasured her years as a stay-at-home mother, later reentering the workforce as part of the noon-time drive-thru team at McDonald's. What started as a part-time job soon became a place she loved, and she was fondly known for her cheerful presence and the countless friendships she made there. Her family affectionately referred to her as the "Unofficial Mayor of Clifton Park," because no matter where she went, Cindy always seemed to run into someone she knew.
Faith and service were cornerstones of Cindy's life. She taught religious education at Saint Mary's Crescent Church, was an active member of the Altar Rosary Society, and dedicated countless hours to volunteering. Most recently, Cindy and Greg were parishioners of St. Edward the Confessor in Clifton Park. Over the years, Cindy gave her time generously to her church, the American Legion Post 1450 Ladies Auxiliary, the Clifton Park Senior Center, Weight Watchers, Silver Sneakers, and even her granddaughter's summer camp program at Okte Elementary, where she was lovingly considered an honorary camp counselor. Cindy had a gift for connecting with children and a true heart for helping others, always ready to lend a hand to friends, neighbors, and anyone in need.
Outside of her community work, Cindy enjoyed simple pleasures that brought her joy – working on word search puzzles, visiting the racino (where she always seemed to have good luck), hunting for the best shopping deals, and, most of all, spending cherished time with her family.
Cindy is survived by her husband of nearly 63 years, Greg Ferjanec; her three children, Amy Davies, Shawn (Laura Pardini), and Cherie (Todd Carusone); her two grandchildren, Taylor Davies (Zachary Hulseapple) and Ryan Dowling; her brothers John (Margaret) Kane and Ronald (Joan) Kane; as well as many nieces and nephews. Cindy was predeceased by her parents, John and Ellen (Opacki) Kane, as well as her brothers, Robert (and his wife, Carol) and Daniel (Gary) (survived by his wife, Kathy), and sisters, Barbara Hatfield (and her husband, Robert "Perry") and Mary (Elaine) Hadcock (survived by her husband, Butch).
Cindy's family would like to extend their utmost appreciation to Dr. John Pezzulo for all of his kindness, compassion, guidance, and assistance throughout Cindy's illness. The family would also like to thank Community Hospice, especially Mitch Forshey (PA), Heather Scarpenny (RN), and Theresa Dicocco (LPN), for the care provided to Cindy and overall support for the family. Finally, much love and gratitude go out to Joanna & Christina – Cindy's caretakers, who treated her like their own family.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4-7 pm at Philip J Brendese Funeral Home 133 Broad Street, (Rte. 32) Waterford.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 am at St. Edward the Confessor Church (569 Clifton Park Center Road, Clifton Park). Interment will be in Saratoga National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Cindy's name to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) or to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).
