Dorothy (Elaine) Barker 1928 - 2024

She has always been known by her middle name Elaine. She was a fun-loving and joyful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was well known for always being dressed to the “Nines” with her elegant stylish tastes. She was often mistaken for being 30 years younger than she really was.

Elaine was born on May 23rd 1928 in Chicago, Illinois to Preal Francis Potts and Jessie Glindon Pack. She died at 96 years of age on December 21, 2024 in Logan, Utah.

She was very proud of the Pack family history, which included her great-grandfather , John Pack, a pioneer who came across the plains with Brigham Young to the Salt Lake valley in July, 1847. She had two siblings, Karl and Marilyn.

While born in Chicago, Elaine grew up mostly in Salt Lake City, Utah and many of her fondest childhood memories centered around the years with her parents, cousins and her aunt and uncle. She was most fond of her cousin Lelia who she thought of as a sister. She also has a strong love for her brother Karl and her still-living sister Marilyn. She attended Granite High School in Salt Lake City, and graduated from Colton High School (Oregon) in 1947.

She Married Glenn Allen Geurts (1925 – 1996) in August, 1947 and had four children. William T. (Bill) Geurts (1951), Barbara L. Tappana (1952), David A. Geurts (1955-2019) and Linda L. Bostrom (1961). The family lived on SE 164th Ave. in Portland, Oregon for nearly 20 years.

She later married Hughby F. Barker (1927-2015) and moved from Portland to Lincoln City, Oregon where they lived for several years. From Lincoln City, they moved to Springfield, Ohio and then back to Logan, Utah in 2011. She and Hughby went on a service mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at the Family History Center in Salt Lake City in 1996. They were also temple workers in the Portland, Oregon and Columbus, Ohio temples.

She had many interests and was talented at everything she did. She was an accomplished seamstress and made many of her own clothes along with clothes for the whole family. In the mid-1960’s she and a friend opened and operated a candle shop. She loved to paint things. Although the family laughs about painting the piano and other things around the house orange, she did some very fine tole painting pieces.

At the age of 50, she took flying lessons in Lincoln City and received her pilot’s license. As a rather eclectic individual, she had many items, both new and old tastefully displayed on many shelves around her house.

She was an avid genealogist and compiled volumes of photos, letters and other documents in her extensive family history, which she worked on literally until the day she passed. Most recently, she did not want to just go to the store and buy Christmas cards, but insisted on making her own cards using an on-line program, printing them out then garnishing them with glitter.

She is survived by her sister Marilyn, children, Bill (Debbi), Barbara, Linda (Victor), daughter-in-law Mitzi as well as many grandkids, great grandkids, and great-great grandkids.

She is preceded in death by husbands Glenn and Hughby, along with son, David.

Her memorial service will be at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints – 65 E Center Street, Hyde Park, Utah 84318 - on Saturday, December 28 at 1:00pm. Interment will be at the North Logan Memorial Park Cemetery.
