Dale Hicks, Jr. began his life's journey on February 9, 1953, in
Union Springs, Alabama to the Late Dale Hicks, Sr. and Mozell Posey Hicks. Dale, affectionately known as Maine's, early years were filled with warmth, laughter, and a compassionate spirit that would shape the person he would become.
Maine was educated in the Bullock County Public School System. He was a member of the Hornet Football team and a proud graduate of the Union Springs High School Class of 1971. During his high school years you could find him and his best friends John Albert Jernigan, Thomas Harris and Cecil Jones, Jr. enjoying high school like teenage young men should.
A patriot at heart, Maine enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country with honor and dedication from 1973. During his military tenure Maine received numerous awards: Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Metal, Expert Infantry Badge, Non Commissioned Officer, Professional Development Ribbons, Army Good Conduct Medal(3D Awd) and Expert Qualification Badge. His military education included Language Training (German, Primary Leadership Course, Primary Technical Course, Basic Non Commissioned Officer Course, and Nuclear Biological Chemical Course. Upon his Honorable Discharge on the 2nd day of June 1986 as SGT E5, he enrolled at Faulkner University earning a Law Degree from Jones School of Law while working at the Alabama State Department Highway Division for over 35 years of service retiring in 2019. He was also a license PRIMERICA Agent with his brother Eddie.
On December 15, 1981, Eddie met the love of his life Helen Jean Dawson. Their loving courtship led to them becoming one on June 4, 1983.
They enjoyed traveling, serving the community, and loving their families. Their love and dedication to each other lasted for 44 years.
He united with Wayman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church at a very young age. Upon his retirement from the military he served faithfully as a Church Trustee, Church School Adult Teacher, choir member and Church School Superintendent until his death.
On Sunday, February 8, 2026 Maine's earthly journey came to a peaceful close at his home in
Montgomery, Alabama. Maine's departure from this world was preceded by his parents and baby brother Eddie.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories: his loving sisters: Annie D. Jones, and Rosa M. Hicks both of
Union Springs, AL; his sister-in-law: Helen Jean Hicks, Warner Robbins, GA; his children he reared as own: Deborah Milan (James), Ariel Elizabeth Hicks, Dacetti J. and Amari S. Milan, all of
Union Springs, AL; David Coleman (Michelle), Kanesha K. Hicks, both of
Montgomery, AL; Olivia M. Coleman of Flint, Michigan; three little ones whose births he witnessed: Kori E. Hicks,
Montgomery, AL; Alania J Milan and Jacolby A. Curry, both of
Union Springs, AL. He also leaves a host of cousins and friends who will forever hold him dear in their hearts.
Life without Maine will never be the same, but we are forever grateful to God for blessing us with his presence for 72 remarkable years. Although it is hard for us to understand, we know that he is reunited with his father, mother, and brother.
