Dan Russell Boyd, 68, of Nebo, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2025, with his family at his side.

Dan was born in McDowell County, NC on March 15, 1957, to the late Joe E. Boyd and Devon Fender Boyd. He was a member of Hillcrest Freewill Baptist Church and the Tow River Bear Association. Dan was among the last of the original mountain men. He was a self-sufficient outdoorsman who knew how to live off the land. Dan loved hunting and fishing and always treated others with respect. He will forever be loved and missed by many.

In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Boyd; and a niece, Courtney Boyd.

Those left to cherish his memory include his soulmate and caretaker, Cynthia Barrier; four children, Nicole Benfield, Joan Boyd Yount, Jason Boyd (Tabatha), and Justin Boyd (Danielle); two sisters, Melody Burnette (Steve) and Patricia Boyd (Tony Clark); a brother, Regan Boyd; eight grandchildren, Nate, Isaiah, Braxton, Gracelynn, Elijah, Aliyah, Kolton, and Dezlyn.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service. Pastor Justin Boyd will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home. For those attending services, hunting & camo attire is welcomed and appreciated.

Memorial contributions may be made to Medi Home Hospice.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all of the nieces and nephews who stood by Papa Boyd during his time of hardship.
