Dan McCune, 85, passed away June 7, 2025 at the VA Hospital in Des Moines. Visitation will be 4 PM - 6 PM with a 6 PM Vigil Service Monday, June 16, 2025 at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, followed by the Nurses Nightingale Service by MercyOne Nursing Honor Guard. A private family committal service will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
Dan was born October 3, 1939 in St. Joseph, MO to Chester and Dolores (Weber) McCune. He spent the majority of his childhood in Red Oak, IA. After graduating from high school, he served in the United States Navy as a Corpsman. He then attended and graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in 1966. It is there where he met the love of his life and future wife, Sandy. They married November 11, 1967, in Chariton, IA and made their home in Des Moines for 52 years. He worked as a registered nurse at the VA Hospital in Des Moines.
Dan was a member of the West Des Moines Elks Lodge and St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with Sandy at the Elks Lodge where he was a member for 24 years. Dan also enjoyed watching sports, cheering on his Hawkeyes, Cyclones, Packers, and Cubs.
Dan is survived by his sons, Mike (Tara) McCune of Johnston and Doug (Kristi) McCune of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Alex McCune, Ciara (Jake) Grovert, Cade McCune, and Sam McCune; great-granddaughter, Gracie Grovert; sister, Mary (Joe) Miller of West Des Moines; brother, Tom (Candi) McCune of Swansea, IL. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Sandy.
