Dan Young Shearer Jr., 87, husband of Shirley Long Shearer, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2025, in Lexington, Kentucky. He was born in Jessamine County on July 19, 1937, to the late Dan Young Shearer and Mary Blevins Shearer. Dan was a longtime farmer and had retired from the State Department of Agriculture, where he had worked as a market reporter. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Kentucky State Fair Board, and served as the past president of the Kentucky Ayrshire Association and the Jessamine County Beef Cattle Club. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters, Sharon Ann Shearer Murphy (David) and Luann Allison; son, Eddy Allison; brother, Vernon Shearer (Shirley); grandchildren, Brett Durham (Ashley), Tabatha Morgan (George), Kyle Lamb (Camryn), Morgan Savage (Zach), Jena Bradley (Teddy), Logan Bryan, Lane Murphy, and Seth Bryan (Kate); as well as great-grandchildren, Gunnar Morgan, Taylor Durham, Steel Reidenbaugh, Corbin Durham, Lillie Mae Durham, Liam Savage, Tate Lamb, Baron Bradley, Kane Bradley, and Noah Bradley. Dan is preceded in death by a son, Dan Young Shearer III; daughter, Janet Lee Shearer Henson; brothers, Jim Ed Shearer and Ronald Dale Shearer; sister, Bonnie Roberts; and grandson, Daniel Shearer. Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 18, at Betts & West Funeral Home with Bro. Jay Webb officiating. Burial will follow at Bluegrass Memorial Gardens, where serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Brett Durham, Kyle Lamb, Logan Bryan, Lane Murphy, and Seth Bryan, and one of Dan’s lifelong friends, Earl Brown. Serving as honorary bearers will be Doroteo Ibarra, Steve Garcia, and Charles Miller. Visitation will be held the evening prior, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM, Tuesday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to go to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Betts & West is honored to serve Dan and the Shearer family in their time of need.
