Dan Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hughes Funeral Home and Crematory - Daphne on Apr. 3, 2025.
Carl Daniel "Dan" Smith, Jr., a resident of Daphne, AL, passed away on March 30, 2025, at the age of 80.
Dan grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where he spent his childhood skiing and fishing on the water. He built a boat with friends during his early years, showcasing his love for adventure and craftsmanship. From a young age, Dan was passionate about sports, participating in running, track and football. He also had a love for singing and was an active member in his school choir.
Dan's athletic talent led him to play football at Auburn University for a couple of years. He graduated from Auburn University in 1964 as a Mechanical Engineer. His strong work ethic and dedication were evident in everything he did, propelling him through a successful career at Ciba Geigy that took him and his family to various locations, creating many cherished memories along the way.
His love for boating, fishing, and being on the water never faded. After retiring from work, he oversaw the building of their house on Lake Martin. This was a project he and his wife lovingly worked on together and enjoyed for many years.
In his retirement, Dan became a Master Gardener in Baldwin County, a member of the Dadeville Lions Club, and served as a deacon at Dadeville Baptist Church. His faith and family were the cornerstones of his life.
Dan married the love of his life, Jenifer "Jeni" Minch Smith, while at Auburn University, and they celebrated their 60 wedding anniversary in 2024. Jeni preceded him in death on March 16, 2025. Also preceding him in death were his parents, Carl and Una Smith.
He is survived by his daughters, Amy (Kelly) Carnes of Mobile, AL, Christina Danielle Smith of Mandeville, LA and Jenifer Lee Smith of Daphne, AL; one granddaughter, Katie Carnes; sister-in-law, Cathy Minch; and two nieces, Susan (Rusty) Minch Starnes and Margaret Minch.
A private memorial service for Dan and Jeni Smith will be held at a later date.
