I met Dana in the early 70´s when she came in my salon to have her hair done.
We had a professional relationship until I retired 4 years ago.
Over all those years we became friends and continued to keep in touch every few months.
Dana was her own woman, lived her truth, supported her friends and was committed to the community she lived in and loved.
She was the absolute best dog person I have ever met!
Anytime you asked about her beloved dogs her face would light up in a huge smile.. they gave her the most joy in life.
Early on in our relationship she invited me to dinner and said " I hope you like lamb!"
Well, I didn´t but wanted to be polite, since that was what she had planned to serve so I replied "YES".
We sat down and I took my first bite of the lamb and it was delicious!
She must have sensed relief on my face and said "You don´t really like lamb, right?" with a knowing smile on her face.
I said " Well, I love this!"
She replied " It´s from the market and you have to know how to cook it!"
After that visit I knew Dana was a woman you were just honest with and didn´t have to shy away from however you felt.
I always appreciated her bluntness, never with ill intent, she just spoke her truth.
I will miss her smile , insights and our conversations .
Rest in peace Dana.

Dana was a long time close friend in the 13 yrs I lived in Madison and many visits after but had not seen her since my last visit in 2018... called her on her BD but just left a message... just learned of her death today after a FB message from a mutual friend in Madison.

Dana used to bring her little service dog Pierre to visit my mother who was confined to a care home during her last few years. Those visits brought so much joy to my mom and the other residents. Our family is grateful to Dana for her thoughtfulness and her friendship with my mother. Our condolences to Dana's family and friends at this time.

My on again/off again friendship with Dana spanned over 40 years, two amazing trips to Japan and so many life moments and dogs shared along the way. So very grateful to have known her. She was a one-of-a-kind person - honest, generous, ever-curious, highly opinionated and equally transparent. She gave us all the gift of her wonderfully contagious sense of humor with a laugh that just drew you right in. Can´t believe you´re gone.

I've known Dana for exactly 36 years this month .... as we were both appointed members of the City of Madison's Public Health Commission in April, 1989 by Mayor Paul Soglin.
Dana was insightful, and a delight to serve with on that City committee -- and it was the start of our friendship. Dana was outraged at the recent imposition of an Ambulance Fee by the City of Madison -- when health care is so obviously a human right, and not an opportunity to fund city services. She and I would travel to the meetings together and share stories, while we conspired about how to improve city services and society overall.
Dana was perhaps the driving force that created Dog Parks in the City of Madison..... or she was at least one of the strongest advocates for that -- starting in the mid-1990's when the idea was new to Madison. And it took plenty of time, many meetings and endless dedication to accomplish these public spaces for dogs -- what today are taken for granted as an obvious opportunity for dogs and their human families.
Dana was funny, caring and supportive of her friends and dedicated to her community. And she always loved to strongly dislike the bike path that runs down her street -- for the past 30 years.
I will miss seeing Dana on her porch as I bike down her street.... always stopping to share an hour of conversation, laughs and insights into our lives and our society.
Thank you, Dana -- for all you did for me and for all of us!!
