Dane Richards, a beloved son, brother, partner, and friend, passed away on July 29, 2025, at the age of 60. Born on November 7, 1964, in Columbus, Indiana, to Priscilla Weaver Richards and Gene Edward Richards, Dane encapsulated the spirit of hard work and dedication from a young age. He embarked on his career in construction at the tender age of 15, eventually owning and operating his own commercial construction company. His commitment to his craft was remarkable; there wasn’t a task too daunting, nor a set of plans he couldn’t interpret. If something needed fixing that was beyond his current knowledge, he was determined to teach himself, embodying a relentless pursuit of learning and improvement.

Dane’s passions extended far beyond his profession. He was an avid outdoorsman, finding joy in fishing, gardening, and grilling. He was the go-to chef for family gatherings, creating meals filled with love that brought everyone together around the table. Some of his most cherished memories were those weekends spent fishing with his brother and brother-in-law at Tunica Lake. The stories shared amongst the trio during their adventures are tales that will be fondly remembered by all who heard them.

Dane's legacy is carried on by his partner, the love of his life, Karen Monteath, and her children, Geoffrey Smith and his wife Mary, and Allison Smith and her partner Richard, whom he embraced as his own. He is also survived by his sister, Cassy Richards McCracken, and her husband Charles, along with his cherished niece, Stephanie Richards Sanders, and her husband Jonathan. His nephews, Cameron McCracken and his wife Tiffany, and Chandler McCracken and his wife Kyla, will forever hold his memory close to their hearts. Dane took great pride in his role as an uncle and will be lovingly remembered by his many great-nieces and great-nephews—Gabe Harris, Hannah Harris, Gracie Sanders, Noah Sanders, Mary Alice McCracken, Maddy Gene McCracken, Griffin McCracken, and Sullivan McCracken.

He also leaves behind his loving aunt, Sue Martin, with whom he shared a particularly close bond, and a multitude of wonderful friends gathered throughout his life, each one grateful for the moments they spent with him.

Dane is preceded in death by his father, Gene Richards, his mother, Priscilla Richards, and his brother, Anthony Richards. Their memories live on through the stories and laughter Dane inspired during his life. His legacy of love, dedication, and adventure will continue to resonate with those who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.

I’m proud to call Dane my big brother and inspiration throughout my life. Growing up I watched Dane overcome many obstacles, yet he never let it stop him and never once complained. He taught me resilience, bravery, and courage in face of adversity. I hope his memory will inspire others to never give up or accommodate their desires to suit the purpose or agenda of others. I will always love my big brother and the closeness we have shared. Hug mom, dad, and Tony for me.
