Daniel Joseph Barry, 83, of Sweet Home went to be with the Lord Thursday March 28, 2024. Danny was born April 23, 1940 in a small sandhill town in western Nebraska called Alliance to Bernice J. (Stevens) and John W. Barry.
Danny was the third of seven children in a close, loving family. Being members of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church the children all attended St. Agnes Academy from Kindergarten through 12th grade.
Young Danny loved his family and his dog Sandy who he thought to chase cats, fight with dogs and enjoy ice cream cones on hot summer days.
Danny always enjoyed being outside, taking long walks, hunting, swimming, playing in the leaves of fall, doing handstands, walking on his hands, wiggling his ears, and pole vaulting in the back yard. In school he loved sports, especially football and basketball. Back then they had leather football helmets without face guards, and Danny ended one season with a broken nose and missing two front teeth. All in all Danny was always kind and humble never demanding or hostile.
Danny loved his church and after high school followed his desire to serve God by joining the Jesuit order to become a "Brother."
Danny lived a number of years in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with his older brother Pat, and will be buried there next to him.
He moved to Oregon over 20 years ago to be near family and has been a resident of Wiley Creek in Sweet Home, Oregon for the last 14 years.
Danny enjoyed the many family reunions in Nebraska and Oregon. He was consistently a winner of many card games, board games and billiards and loved a good camp fire.
Danny is survived by sister Peggy Schopp and her husband Tom, sister Barbara Swan, brother Timothy Barry and his wife Beth, outlaw brother-in-law Noel Corbell and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents John and Bernice Barry, nephew Christifer Corbell, brother Pat Barry, sisters Geraldine Corbell and Kay Yankovich. Also two of his outlaw brother in-law Ed Yankovich and Tony Swan.
Danny will be sorely missed by his family, his church, and his family from Wiley Creek.
Viewing will be 10:00 – 10:30 am, Recitation of the Rosary will take place at 10:30 am and Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 am all on Saturday April 6th at St. Helen Catholic Church. Interment will be at St. Michael Cemetery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to ALS Northwest (alsoregon.org) to support those dealing with Lou Gehrig's Disease. So sorry to hear about Daniel. He left many memories with my three children. We lived next-door to him and Pat for several years in Sioux Falls. I always remembered Seven Daniel at Christmas time with musical cards. He loved music and when I made cookies, he was so delighted. he loved life. Daniel was a wonderful soul.
