Daniel Patrick Cain, 78, of Simpsonville, SC, husband of Mary Elizabeth Cain, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, in his home after a long, heroic fight. Born in the Bronx, New York, he was the son of the late Daniel J. Cain and Frances Trainor Cain.
In addition to his wife, Daniel is survived by two children, Brian Cain (Amanda) and Colleen Malla (Grace); three grandchildren, Emily, William, and Caroline; and two sisters, Betty Cain (Edward) and Marie Cain-Sweatt (Joe). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Dennis Cain, sister-in-law Theresa Cain, and brother-in-law Edward Merrigan.
Dan treasured time spent with family and friends and worked tirelessly to provide a secure and loving home. Danny served in the US Marine Reserves, earning a National Defense Service Medal and a Rifle Marksman Badge. After his discharge from the Marines, he worked for IBM and rose through the ranks, finally retiring from Prodigy Services as the regional manager for the Southeastern US after 30 years of service. Switching from computers to the outdoors, he worked for Volusia County, Florida as an environmental specialist caring for protected wetlands. Upon moving to Simpsonville, SC, he worked for FRF Engineering and finally, for the City of Greer in the environmental area. A true homebody, he spent his retirement around town, enjoying time with Mary and friends at the YMCA. Dan was a natural handyman and a "fixer" to his core; he never met a home improvement, automotive, or computer problem he couldn't handle. Dan's "green thumb," cultivated by years as a tree farm owner, will live on in his beautiful landscaping of his home and the many gentle trees, flowers, and shrubs he nurtured throughout his life. Although Dan maintained that he was not really an animal lover, he is now reunited with his beloved Yorkshire terrier, McKenna. Dan never gave up and showed strength beyond measure as he fought diabetes, infections, and far too many surgeries. He will be deeply missed by a multitude of family and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Cannon-Byrd Funeral Home; 1150 N. Main St, Fountain Inn, SC 29644.
The family will receive friends starting at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Diabetes Foundation.
