Daniel "Dan" Dawaine Chytka, a dedicated serviceman, beloved father, and cherished friend, passed away on January 27, 2025, at the Lebanon Veterans Home. He was 69 years old.
Born on June 13, 1955, in Wagner, South Dakota, Dan was the son of Lawrence "Bud" and Bonnie (Miley) Chytka. One of five siblings, he shared a strong bond with his family. At the age of 17, driven by his deep sense of duty, Dan graduated high school and enlisted in the United States Navy, beginning his training in San Diego, California. His distinguished naval career took him across the country, from Whidbey Island in 1976 to Virginia and Key West, Florida, in 1980. In 1982, he transitioned to recruitment duties in Sioux City, Iowa, before returning to Whidbey Island in 1986 for the final decade of his service. Dan retired as an E9 Command Master Chief from the Whidbey Naval Air Station, a rank that reflected his leadership and dedication. His service was recognized with the Navy Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star in addition to many others, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his country.
Following his military retirement, Dan embarked on a successful second career in auto financing. After moving to Oregon in 2000, he settled in a picturesque home along the Santiam River and became a trusted figure in the community through his work at Power Chevrolet in Sublimity, Oregon.
Despite his professional achievements, Dan’s most treasured role was that of a father to his sons, Michael and Brian, and later as a grandfather to his three adored grandchildren. He was a man of many passions, dedicating time to coaching and refereeing soccer for USA Soccer, actively participating in his church, and completing three mission trips to Mexico to build homes for those in need. He found joy in the great outdoors—gold panning, hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, and river floating were among his favorite pastimes. An avid treasure seeker, he also enjoyed attending storage auctions in search of hidden gems.
In 2016, Dan moved from Lyons, Oregon, to the Lebanon Veterans Home, where he spent his final years. He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence "Bud" Chytka. He is survived by his loving mother, Bonnie Chytka; his sons, Michael (Chelsea) Chytka and Brian (Sarah) Chytka; his siblings, Valerie Schmidt, Rick Chytka, Tim Chytka, and Mary McTavish; and his cherished grandchildren, Trevor Chytka, Joseph Chytka, and Jackson Chytka. He will also be deeply missed by numerous extended family members and dear friends.
A celebration of Dan’s life, including military honors, will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Weddle Funeral Service, located at 1777 N. Third Ave., Stayton, Oregon 97383. A reception will follow. Friends and family are encouraged to share their memories and photos on the online memorial.
Dan’s legacy of service, kindness, and adventure will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Fair winds and following seas, Master Chief.
