Dan was my C team commander in Vietnam.
I got myself in a bit of trouble as an XO in one of his A camps and He wound up backing me up.
Sometime in the early 2000's I visited with Dan and his wife in their home in Fayetteville. As always, he was gratuitous and cordial.
His understanding and support back in 1968 literally changed my life.

My best wishes for his family and friends.

I remember Dan from when he was in charge of the BSEP program on Ft. Bragg. I taught ESL and although he wasn't my supervisor, he always included me in the faculty meetings. He was always such a decent, honorable man whose warmth and caring were obvious to the students, faculty, and staff around him. I will always think of him with great fondness and admiration. But, Dan also had a wry sense of humor.

I will never forget the time when some special forces soldiers had placed a dead racoon--in full rigor mortis--with a lit cigarette in its mouth on the toilet seat in the men's bathroom. Two of my ESL students came laughing into my room. When they told me about the raccoon, I went to Dan to see if he could investigate--after all, I couldn't go into the men's room! He looked up at me, reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a trash bag, and said, "Special Forces are in the building. Have your students body bag the deceased and dispose of the remains in the dumpster, ma'am!" My reply, of course, was "Yes, sir!"

This is one of the world's great men, but the sad truth is the passing of this great hero. No matter where I am, Your spirit will be beside me, you taught me well as my superior and neighbor. I will always say as you have said "Better Than I Deserve" Old soldiers never die, they just fade away. General Douglas MacArthur Rest in Peace, SIR.
