WILKES-BARRE — Daniel J. Curran, PhD., passed away April 13, 2024, after a short illness.
Born Oct. 27, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late Thomas and Mary Curran. A graduate of Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Manhattan College. He earned a PhD. in history from Fordham University, writing a dissertation focused on Pennsylvania politics in the mid 18th century. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Dr. Curran moved to Wilkes-Barre in 1959, to teach history at King's College, a liberal arts college founded by the Holy Cross order. He was introduced to the love of his life, Patricia O'Connor, and they married in 1963. They raised five children as he continued to teach at King's, progressing to become a full professor.
He greatly loved teaching at King's and was a huge proponent of education as a means of personal advancement for the benefit of society. Dr. Curran shared this love of learning and curiosity with King's students for more than fifty years. In retirement, he continued to read multiple newspapers and journals daily, and shared his knowledge and experience with his children and 15 grandchildren.
His brothers, Thomas and John Curran, preceded him in death.
His wife of 61 years, Patricia; sons: Thomas Curran, M.D.; Daniel Curran, M.D.; Patrick Curran, M.D.; and Sean Curran, M.D.; daughter, Patricia Curran, J.D.; 15 grandchildren; and other family and friends will miss him very much.
Celebration of Daniel's life will take place in the Chapel of Christ the King, 29 W. North St. in Wilkes-Barre, on Saturday, April 20. A gathering of friends and family will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m.
Donations to the Daniel J. Curran Scholarship at King's College are preferred and will honor his memory.

Dan was a wonderful teacher. I knew him as a student, later as a faculty member at King's, and husband of Patricia, who was a neighbor when we grew up in Kingston. Rest in peace, Dan.

I had taken a few of Dr. Curran´s classes at King´s 50 years ago. He is one of the few professors I remember from King´s. He was very passionate and straight forward in his presentations. I am glad to read he spent his career+ at the school.

Dear Curran Family,
Kindly accept my condolences. I always hated history until I had Dr. Curran at Kings College. I enjoyed his class so much that I signed up for another one the following semester. Much to my dismay, the school changed instructors after I committed. Dr. Curran had such an interesting presentation that he captured my attention, and is one of only a few instructors that I remember from my college years. Sincerely, Alyson Kole
