It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel Alfonso Fonseca on December 29, 2024, in the comfort of his home in Santa Rosa, surrounded by his loving and devoted sons.
Daniel was born in San Francisco in 1940 to Nicefora Rodriguez-Brocé of Chitré, Panama and Alfonso Gonzales Fonseca of La Piadad Michoacán, Mexico. He is survived by his children Michael and Daren Fonseca of Santa Rosa and Petaluma respectively.
Daniel graduated from the Barber College of San Francisco in 1962. He worked as a gifted and accomplished hair stylist for over five decades in San Francisco, Marin, and Sonoma Counties, eventually opening Daniel Fonseca Hair Cutting Designs in Terra Linda in 1975, which he owned for close to a decade.
He also had a lifelong love of gardening – creating beautiful landscapes with always interesting and thoughtful use of a variety of plants, trees and ground coverings, enriching the spaces he applied his green thumb to. In addition, he enjoyed cycling and could be seen riding his bike from Petaluma to San Francisco on many occasions.
Always having a robust sense of inquiry with an eye to social justice for those challenged in our society, Daniel took classes in Labor Studies at both City College of San Francisco and the University of San Francisco. This found its outlet in practice with memberships in various organizations: Barber's Union of San Francisco and Founding member and Officer of the Professional Organization of Hair Stylists. In addition he was a member of the National Letter Carriers Union AFL-CIO. He also served in various capacities as a member of the Terra Linda Rotary.
Daniel was a lifelong learner with varied and diverse intellectual and spiritual interests, including but not limited to philosophy, religion, psychology, history and music. He approached ideas and culture with an openness of spirit in both inquiry and practice.
But most of all we remember him as a thoughtful, involved and loving father who guided, taught and provided all things for our (his sons) successful journey in life. He will be greatly missed.
Friends are invited to celebrate a Funeral Mass on Monday, January 13, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. James Catholic Church, 125 Sonoma Mountain Pkwy, Petaluma, CA. Interment, Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Petaluma.
